Edith "Edie" H. Abbott
Canton - Canton- Edith "Edie" Mae Hawkins Abbott, 94, of Johnson Drive, passed away peacefully to her eternal heavenly home, Tuesday, August 28, 2012, on the birthday of her devoted and loving daughter, Joyce.
"Nanny Edie" was born in the summer season July 27, 1918 in the beautiful mountains of Sunburst Logging Camp to the late Robert Edward Hawkins and the late Maude Medford Hawkins. The Hawkins family later moved to Canton where Edie grew up and graduated from Canton High School. During her high school years she enjoyed playing tennis and making many dear friendships that have lasted a lifetime. Edie was indeed a beautiful young lady and when she began her career at Champion Paper and Fibre Company as a switchboard operator working in the "Main Office", she definitely caught the eye of her future husband, Jack, who together shared a happy and blessed marriage for many years. Edie was a loving mother, a proud grandmother, and a devoted homemaker. Anyone who visited her home was always welcomed with open arms and made to feel as if they were a part of the Abbott family. Edie was a wonderful cook and her delicious coconut and chocolate pies were favorites of friends and family. She was also a talented craft artisan and her hooked rugs and needlepoint pieces were admired by everyone. An avid golfer, she was a member of Springdale Country Club and the Springdale Ladies Club and was blessed to play golf every Tuesday until her late 80's. Edie was an accomplished and respected bridge player and was a member of several bridge clubs playing regularly until the age of 93. She was a member of Canton First Baptist Church, where she attended Sunday School and was involved in other church activities. To know "Nanny Edie" was to love her- and the life's lessons that she taught her family will always be remembered by each of them. Together she and her husband Jack touched many lives in our community and we shall never forget their giving and caring hearts.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack Abbott who passed away in 1991 and her brothers, Harry and Eddie Hawkins.
Surviving are her daughter, Joyce Abbott Cook and her husband, Buford Cook of Canton; her grandchildren, Mark and Russ Cook both of Greeley, Colorado; her great-grandchildren, Grayson Cook of Greeley Colorado and Meredith Cook of Rocky Mount, NC; a niece who was like a second daughter, Ann Hawkins Buckner and her husband, Dale Buckner of Canton; a great-nephew who was like a great- grandson, Greg Raxter of Hendersonville and many many friends who loved Edie dearly.
