Edith Redwood Cook

Asheville - Edith Redwood Cook was born in Asheville, NC, on May 24, 1929, to Robert Lee Redwood and Sophia Garlick Redwood. She attended elementary and high school at St. Genevieve of the Pines in Asheville and graduated from St. Mary's College in Raleigh, NC. She enjoyed a childhood roller skating and riding her bicycle in downtown Asheville and Biltmore. Edith's happiest family memories included summer vacations at Tip Top Inn in Pawley's Island SC, and Kanuga Camps in Hendersonville.

After college, Edith worked for the Farmer's Federation in Asheville. Next, she moved to Atlanta for a position with Delta Airlines. Edith later returned to Asheville to raise her family where she also worked at Christ School in Arden for 25 years as an administrative assistant. In retirement, she was a devoted grandmother, active in her church, Grace Episcopal, volunteer at the Rathbun Center, friend to many and a helpful caregiver, especially at Givens Estates.

She is survived by her three children: daughters, Nina Cook Young and her husband, Charles, of Grapevine, TX; Susan Cook Sparger and her husband, James, of Leicester, NC; and son, Philip Henry "Chip" Cook, Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Greenville, SC. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Samuel, William and Amanda Sparger; and Philip and Audrey Cook; and, three step grandchildren; Hayley, Spencer and Caroline Young. She was predeceased by her sisters, Mrs. Eleanor Redwood Penovich and Mrs. Sophia Redwood Bass. Her children would like to thank the exceptional staff at Givens Healthcare Center for the loving care provided to their Mother over the last two years.

A funeral service and celebration of Edith's life will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Asheville on Saturday, September 13, 2014, at 11:00 AM. our friendship goes back to 1967 when my husband was called as chaplain at Christ School. Our son Peter and Chip were friends during those years. Most recently we have visited with Edith at Givens Estates each summer on our visits to Asheville. We will miss her so much. She's part of our history. Our condolences to Chip, Susan and Nina.
