J.D. Jones

1922 - 2010

J.D. Jones, 88, of Shelby, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, December 19, 2010. Born April 22nd, 1922 in Grover, N.C. to the late Rev. Sam R.W. Jones and Sally Jamison, J.D. was the Last of 7 children whom all proceded him in death.

He served in WW II from 1942 to 1947 and in 1949 moved to Philadelphia with the words of his father, "son, don't ever forget God, keep your hand in his", a saying J.D. always passed on to those he met.

While in Philadelphia he married Nellie B. Hill who proceded him(2001), this move began a new challenge of education and Career as a Electronic Engineer with the Department of Defense Frankford Arsenal, then in 1977 moved to Ft. Walton Beach, Fla. where he retired after 30 years of at Eglin A.F.B.

He joined Beulah First Baptist Church were he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher until 2001. He later moved to Asheville, where he joined Hill Street Baptist Church until 2005. His final destination brought him to Shelby, where he joined Eskridge Grove Missionary Baptist, Shelby.

Survivors include his son, Gregory Jones (Gwendolyn) of Fayettville; daughter, Beverly Tate (John) of the home; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Eric Jones of Fayettville; three great grands, Jayden Jones and Lola Jones of Fayetville, Jonathan Jackson of Charlotte; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, December 27, at Eskridge Grove Baptist Church, Shelby. A visitation will be held at the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will take place at White Oak Springs Cemetery. Services entrusted to J.W. Gill & Sons Funeral Home, Kings Mountain.
