John Mulvaney Obituary

John "Jack" P. Mulvaney

Spartanburg, SC - John (Jack) Patrick Mulvaney, 84, of 110 Summit Hills Drive, Spartanburg, SC, passed away Sunday, December 13, 2015, 30 years after his initial diagnosis of heart disease. His longevity is due in no small part to the amazing care he received from his cardiologist, Dr. F. Michael Eickman.

Born on July 2, 1931, in Asheville, NC, he was the son of the late Norbert P. and Lillian Felthaus Mulvaney. He was a graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School and received his B.S. in Textiles from NC State University. Shortly after graduating from NC State, he was inducted into the Army and stationed in Japan where he received the Good Conduct Medal while serving as a Cryptographer.

He began his professional career in the textile industry with the American Enka Company in Enka, NC. He specialized in textile research, designing and executing experiments to develop yarns and fabrics. He quickly rose to a supervisor position, overseeing and training new engineers and operators. In 1979, he and his family relocated to Spartanburg, SC, where he joined Hoechst-Celanese. He continued working in R&D overseeing the Lab until his retirement in 1990. He was a founding member of Jesus, Our Risen Savior Catholic Church, a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus with Fr. Maurice R. Daly Assembly #1655, and a member of the American Legion of SC, Post #0172. He was also a member of the NC State Alumni Association and proudly proclaimed his devotion to the Wolfpack to everyone who would listen.

A former active member of Three Pines Country Club, he enjoyed playing golf and was involved with the SC Men's Golf Association for many years as well as the Senior Men's Interclub Golf Association. He and his beloved late wife, Jeanne Sluder Mulvaney, were long-time supporters of the Flat Rock Playhouse, and he continued attending plays regularly after her passing. He loved music and lent his sweet Irish tenor ("Golden Throat" as he dubbed himself) whenever the opportunity arose. His greatest joy was making people laugh, and he was adored by all who knew him.

Survivors include daughter Lisa Mulvaney Neal and her husband Bobby of Spartanburg, SC; sister Joan Johnson and her husband Gene of Asheville, NC; sister-in-law Mary Mulvaney of Pittsburgh, PA; brother-in-law Robert Sluder and his wife Charlotte of Asheville, NC; sister-in-law Betty Hall and her husband George of Hendersonville, NC, sister-in-law Phyllis Sluder of Asheville, NC; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Carolyn Mulvaney and his brother Jim Mulvaney.

A Funeral Mass will be conducted by the Reverend Edgardo Enverga, CRM at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, December 28, 2015, at Jesus, Our Risen Savior Catholic Church, 2575 Reidville Road, Spartanburg SC. Honorary escort will be provided by members of the Fr. Maurice R. Daly Assembly #1655 Knights of Columbus. Visitation and a Celebration of Life Reception will follow at the Church for family and friends. Private inurnment will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spartanburg Animal Shelter and Humane Society, 150 Dexter Rd, Spartanburg, SC 29303 and the JORS Catholic Church Building Fund, 2575 Reidville Rd, Spartanburg, SC 29301.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the healthcare and physical therapy staff at Summit Hills for the care and love shown Jack during the time he resided there.

Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.jmdunbar.com and c/o J Mulvaney, PO Box 333, Moore SC 29369.

Jack was a special person who made everyone he touched a little more positive and happier. We knew him through visits to see my mother there at Summit Hills and always looked forward to visiting with Jack. And the positive encouragement he gave my mother will be remembered and appreciated.
