I had the honor and pleasure of working closely with Lewis for a number of years at Prospect Terrace Condominiums where he lived. I managed the property and Lewis became the president of the homeowners association. Honestly, once Lewis accepted the position, by general agreement he was acknowledged to be the absolute best person to continue in the role for as long as he wanted to. Who would not want such a fine, honorable person to be at the helm? He was always available to discuss the latest issue or difficulty, and his kindness, wisdom, and humor could help resolve the trickiest problem. And his laughter! He truly was a joyful person who could not help but share his love and hope for justice with the world.
He will be deeply missed by his many friends and family. He touched countless lives.

I met Lewis in Building Bridges. He was a constant presence in that organization. His eyes radiated life warmth, love and his smile was like a ray of sunshine. He was likeable and approachable. Always upbeat and in a good state of mind. He was a solid rock in this community, a good man. He was generous with his time to many organizations. Too many good men dying too young in this town. He will be missed but forever remembered.

Lewis and I grew up in Mocksville and attended the Presbyterian Church together. As youngsters, in a close knit community, we were blessed to have role models like his parents.
At his 50th high school reunion, we were reminded Lewis was one of a handful of African-Americans to integrate the all-white high school here.
As a precursor, this was an example of the contributions he would make in life.
With deepest sympathy to the family,

Always upbeat, the most infectious laugh I have ever heard, and always able to take a moment to talk about the day to day of life. Lewis was my neighbor for many years, and a better neighbor could not be found anywhere. He will be missed, but not forgotten. My sincere condolences to all the members of his family, may they find peace in the knowledge of all the lives Lewis touched in such a positive way.

I met Lewis in 1974 playing city league basketball with the VA team. We reconnected in the 80's & 90's via the Asheville Track Club. In recent years we would always talk when we bumped into one another at the downtown post office. Lewis was a gentleman of the highest order and a gift to our community. What a loss.

Lewis had such a radiant laugh which made everyone's sprit lifted when he was around. We could his laugh from two courts down at Aston Park.
He loved to play tennis and help people in his community. He always had a positive attitude to look at life and enjoyed whatever he was involved.
It was such a shock to loose hime since I learned he was sick just day before he passed away.
But I know he is at peace and will watch us from haven.
I am blessed the time I share with him.

Lewis radiated kindness and joy - his smile lit up the room and his laughter was infectious. I was fortunate to be co-facilitators with him in Building Bridges and found him to be a wealth of knowledge and wisdom. I deeply admired the way he spoke his truth and used curiosity as a means of bridging differences in opinion. I always looked forward to seeing him and I will miss him dearly. Thinking of Toni and the rest of Lewis's family as they grieve and celebrate his life.

I was lucky enough to get to know Lewis as a competitive runner - he was always a minute or so ahead of me at the finish line. Some of my most enjoyable training runs were with Lewis and the ATC gang at Bent Creek on Sunday mornings back in the 80s. He was a gentleman of the highest order, a great friend and fierce competitor. From all of his many friends in the running community, he will be missed. RIP Lewis!

I knew Lewis so briefly, as neighbor and leader of our homeowners association, but it did not take long to know what a fine person he was. I especially valued his thorough knowledge of local history, and his warm friendliness to all. Surely his family and close friends will find consolation in wonderful memories of his life.

My very deepest sympathy to the family. It was my pleasure to know Lewis and work with him for many years when he was on the Asheville Board of Education, as well as the Cougar Sports TV Network and My40 Sports. He was the definition of a Class Act....always helping and encouraging others, enriching lives and the community, all while flashing that big smile! Words cannot express his value and meaning to those who knew him. I will miss him greatly!
