THOMAS McINTYRE Obituary

THOMAS KIRKLAND McINTYRE

WEAVERVILLE - Thomas K. McIntyre, age 76, of Weaverville, died Tuesday, June 7, 2011.

Born in Chesnee, South Carolina, he graduated from Wofford College with a degree in Education and Psychology. He signed a professional baseball contract as a pitcher with the then-New York Giants in 1956 and played in their minor-league organization in Danville, Va., before joining the Army. He served at Ft. Bliss, Texas, for two years and in the Reserves for five years. Upon honorable discharge, he became the athletic director and head coach at Boiling Springs High School in Boiling Springs, SC (1958-1974). In 1974, he became the athletic director and head football coach at Hillcrest High School in Dalzell, SC (1974-1988), winning the 1985 4A Division 2 State Championship in football. Among the honors he received during his career were selection as the SC Football Coach of the Year in 1985, assistant and then head coach of SC Shrine Bowl teams (1981, 1987), the Wofford College Athletic Hall of Fame (1990), and the SC Order of the Silver Crescent (2000). He retired from SC in 1988, then became athletic director and head football coach at North Buncombe High School in Weaverville (1988-1998). He loved being a teacher and coach and being involved in the lives of so many young people. He enjoyed being around people and always had a funny story to share.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jacqueline Bates McIntyre of Weaverville; three children, Thomas K. McIntyre, Jr., of Hampton, Va., C. Edwin McIntyre of Cary, and Nancy E. McIntyre of Lubbock, Texas; four grandchildren, Christy Pellicer, Scott McIntyre, Sarah Tuttle, and Edwin Tyler McIntyre; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler Scott McIntyre, Makayla Powers, and Jude Pellicer.

To the McIntyre family, He was a man among men. Coach, a term that carries such respect among the players, parents, and fans. Your Husband, Father, and Grandfather brought out great actions to help mold boys and girls into adults. I only played under Coach McIntyre for two seasons, but I learned so much during that time. I remember alot of tears when your family left Boiling Springs from almost everyone. Coach McIntyre is and ever will be a man remembered, respected, and loved.

Please except our sincere condolences from the Garifalon Family. You don't really know how much of an inspritation someone has on your life until you get a little older in life. I know Coach Mac inspired my brother Tim to coach High School football and baseball. I now have been officiating High School baseball and volleyball for over tens. Thank you Coach Mac, you will be missed.

I have only fond memories of Coach McIntyre, he was such an inspritation to so many of us at Boiling Springs High (class of 1976) He is the reason I became an athletic trainer as my life vocation. I will never be able to thank him enough. I want to express my condolences for your loss, Hank Mason

Please accept our sincere condolences on the death of Coach Mcintyre. We never had the opportunity to meet Coach but we count son Tom as friend and family and grandaughter Christy is our daughter-in-law. As a coach and mentor I'm sure that Tom would ask for no laurels but simply to believe he played as hard as he could and never let the good Lord down. May he rest in God's eternal peace. Coach McIntyre Family:

It was truly my honor to have known Coach Tommy McIntyre since the mid 60's. He was truly a good friend.

I had the great pleasure to voice his last game as a football coach in South Carolina on the Shrine Bowl Radio Network. At that time he was Head Coach of Hillcrest Dalzell and was selected to be the Head Coach of the South Carolina Sandlappers Squad in the 50th annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolina’s football game played at that time at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Charlotte.

He was truly an outstanding football coach and educator in North and South Carolina throughout his career. He certainly touched the lives of thousands of student athletes.

He will be missed.

May God keep each member of his family and those lives he touched firmly in the palm of his hand, during this most stressful time.

Dear Jackie--

So sorry to hear about Tom. Unfortuntely we had pretty much lost contact with the two of you since you moved to NC and sold the place in Dalzell. So glad you put the notice in the Columbia paper so that we could spread the word to his many friends in Sumter and Dalzell. We appreciate all he did for his Hillcrest teams, but most of all not for the kind of coach he was, but for the kind of man he was and for the kind of mentor he was to the boys. I know you were right there by his side doing your part; if anyone doubts it, all they need do is be reminded of the year you kept Matt Mills in your home (when his father was transferred) so that he could play for Tom his senior year.

Much sympathy,
Kenneth Hamilton

My condolences to Coach's wife and family at this sad time. Coach McIntyre taught his students to excel--being "sort of good" wasn't enough, he taught us that we could always be better than good with just a little more work.

Coach Mac! not only did he teach me about playing sports at north buncombe, he taught me about being a man. I'll never forget when he was my drivers ed instructor. one time he had me pull over on the side of the highway all of the sudden. he jumped out of the car a ran up the hill next to us. I didn't know what was going on! he quickly got back in holding a hand full of flowers and said "my wife will like these" with a big ole grin....
i have been so blessed to of had so many influential people in my life, Coach Mac is a favorite

He gave me the opportunity to coach with him at Hillcrest Dalzell winning the 4A State Championship in 1985. He was and still is father figure to me.
