Wayne Mathis

Jacksonville - Wayne Mathis, 81, of Jacksonville, formerly of Burnsville, died Monday, October 7, 2013 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC.

He was a son of the late Roy and Eva McIntosh Mathis. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley G. Mathis; his sister, Jewel Penland; and two brothers, Ward Mathis and Roy Wayne Mathis. He was the owner of the Diamond Center in Jacksonville and served in the United States Air Force.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2013 at Pineland Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville with Reverend David Vanderbilt officiating. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the Mathis Family Cemetery in Burnsville.

Survivors include his wife, Vernice Padgett Mathis of the home; two daughters, Jo Ann Mathis of Jacksonville, Eva Eddings and her husband, Bill, of China Grove; his son, Roy Wayne Mathis, Jr. of Jacksonville; four sisters, Marie Ferguson of Jonesborough, TN, Mary Robinson of Burnsville, Louise Young of Burnsville, Hannah Neighbors of Hamlet; two brothers, Ed Mathis of Hickory, Ted Mathis of Asheville; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two step-sons, and many nieces and nephews of whom he loved dearly. Wayne was dearly loved by all who knew him.

He was a longtime member of Elkshoal Baptist Church of Burnsville, but more recently of Pineland Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville, NC.

My love to all of the family.Louise and I were close for many years and to know and love her was to know and love her family. Wayne was very special to my heart ! God Bless you all.
