William "Bill" Edwards
Andrews - William "Bill" Edwards, 86 of Andrews, passed away Sunday, July 18, 2021, in a Bryson City care facility. Bill was born April 7, 1935 in Asheville to the late Kenneth Boyd and Ruth Wesley Brooks Edwards. He served in the United States Navy and was a Korean War veteran. Bill had been a talented athlete in high school where he earned the nickname "Slick" from his high school teammates and the name remained with him throughout life. Bill won all county in basketball and had even received a college scholarship to play with the Indiana Hoosiers. He enjoyed golfing, having won many golf tournaments up and down the east coast. Bill's best years were spent partnered in business with his brother, Ken and son, Joe. They owned and operated Discount Cars & Trucks, selling pre-owned vehicles. He was a member of Long Creek Masonic Lodge No. 205 in Huntersville, North Carolina and grew up in Riverside Baptist Church in Asheville, North Carolina. Bill enjoyed leading the convoy of cars on the annual family vacation, seated often next to his grandfather, Paw Brooks.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Edwards Colmenares.
Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Janet Hardin Edwards; four sons, Jimmy Edwards and wife Angela, of Topton, Jeff Edwards of Republic, Missouri, Joe Edwards and wife, April, of Jonesboro, Tennessee, and Larry Lovingood and wife, Clara, of Asheville; a sister, Denise Edwards Goodson of Asheville; a brother, Ken Edwards of Arden, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Ashley Wilson, Lindsey Edwards, Brook and Heather Lovingood, and Trevor, Madison, and Max Edwards; four great-grandchildren, Alena and Jaxton Edwards, and Noah and Luke Wilson; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 24, 2021, at Bull Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Marshall, North Carolina, with Minister Will Hasskamp officiating. Pallbearers will be Gabe Hasskamp, Conner Ryon, David Rathburn, Britt Tate, Max Edwards, and Donnie Isley. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Navy.
The family will gather at Gateway Church following the service for a meal.
