Alexander Bronsberg Obituary

Alexander (Arlie) Bronsberg of Lackawanna Avenue, Swoyersville, passed away Thursday at his home.

Born in Kingston, he was the son of the late John W. and Anna Michaels Bronsberg Sr. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Wyoming. He attended Swoyersville High School, and prior to retirement was employed as a union carpenter.

Al or Arlie, as he was known to many family and friends, enlisted in the Army in 1941 and his first duty assignment was at the Pearl Harbor Naval Base in Hawaii. Al was there during the attack on Pearl Harbor and was one of the attack's last survivors in Northeast Pennsylvania.

Alex received the American Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Star and the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with one Bronze Star.

Al was very proud of his service to his country and became a dedicated volunteer at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, organizing numerous activities and fundraisers for the veterans. His exemplary volunteerism earned him the distinguished Award of Honor from the Military Order of the Cootie.

Al was a life member of the Military Order of the Cootie; life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 396, Wyoming; and a life member and past post commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 283, Kingston. He was also the past commander of the District 11. He was poppy chairman for the annual drive.

He was a life member of the Marine Corps League in Parsons and a member of the American Legion, Mountain Top.

Al was also a life member of Maltby Fire Co. in Swoyersville, having served as the first assistant chief and also served on the board of directors. He was also the fire marshal for the Borough of Swoyersville.

Surviving are his son, Bernard J. Bronsberg, P.E. and his wife, Molly Gallagher Bronsberg, Carverton; grandsons, Bernie and Gregory; sister, Mary Ann Bump, Orange; and brother, David, Lake Louise.

Family and friends are invited to attend Al's funeral Monday at 10 a.m. from Lehman-Gregory Funeral Home Inc., 281 Chapel St., Swoyersville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Wyoming. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Courtdale. Friends and family may call Sunday, 5 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
