Alice Sallada Obituary

It is with great sadness that we share that Alice Hartzell Sallada, 77, of Dallas, passed away Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023, in her home.

Born in Hackensack, N.J., Alice was the daughter of the Rev. Howard G. Hartzell and Jane Hartzell. As a child, she sang in her father's church choir, which led to a lifetime love of singing and playing the piano. A strong student athlete with a love of reading, Alice attended Bucknell University, the school of her parents, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English. During college, Alice was proud member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, and maintained a lifelong engagement with that group.

Post-college, Alice followed her parents to Dallas to begin work as an English teacher. It was during those early years that Alice met the love of her life, Jack Sallada, while he was back in town recovering from surgery. They wed in 1968 and welcomed their first son, John F. Sallada, III in 1975 and their second son, James U. Sallada in 1979.

As a result of taking a job with the Miller Brewing Company, Alice and Jack moved to Milwaukee, Wis., in 1977, where they spent the next 20 years making terrific friends and having a strong impact on the community. Alice was also an excellent tennis player, and while in Milwaukee won many amateur tennis tournaments. After dedicating her life to her boys for many years, Alice returned to her love of teaching in the '90s, serving as a substitute teacher, a formal tutor, and leader of the academic support program for the University School of Milwaukee.

Upon returning to Dallas in their retirement, Alice began tutoring English and helped hundreds of local Dallas high schoolers prepare for the English SATs. Renowned for her work, students speak often about how Alice helped them get into college. Alice continued tutoring up until her recent passing.

Over her lifetime, Alice was deeply involved in many clubs and activities. In Milwaukee, she was a proud member of the Junior League, serving both as a regular member and a Sustainer. While in the Junior League, she was a member of the "Singers" and would often perform for seniors. She served on the PTAs at all of her children's schools, and even was the President of the PTA at Morse Middle School in 1989. She joined the "Thursday Club" in Dallas and was a member up until her passing.

Over her life, Alice was a member of the Milwaukee Athletic Club, the Westmoreland Club, and the Huntsville Golf Club. The latter being a special place of joy for her grandchildren when they would come visit.

Alice adored her grandchildren, showering them with cards, gifts and a constant stream of smushed baked goods. After a lifetime of raising boys, she was so pleased to have a granddaughter with whom to share experiences.

We like to think that Alice is now in heaven with her husband, John F. Sallada Jr., whom are both presumably getting ready for cocktails.

Surviving are her son, John and his wife, Caren and their children, Jordan and Ford (John IV); and her son, James and his wife, Kate, and their children, Owen and Jameson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home Inc., 140 N. Main St., Shavertown. Friends may call from 1 p.m. to service time. A reception will follow and will be announced at the service.

We are seeking to create a College Scholarship for Excellence in English in Alice's name at Wyoming Seminary. While it has yet to be named, contributions can be made to the Alice H. Sallada Memorial Fund at Wyoming Seminary, The Development Office, 201 N. Sprague Ave., Kingston, PA 18702.

I knew Alice in high school, where she had a reputation as a kind and caring person. The world is diminshed without her in it.

Mrs. Sallada was my SAT tutor in high school, and with her help, I'm currently pursuing a degree in politics at one of my dream institutions. She always greeted her students with a warm smile, freshly baked brownies, and a sincere love for learning, and l will forever be grateful for the doors and opportunities she opened for me. I'm sure I can speak for all her students when I say that she'll be greatly missed.
