The servant of God, Anna Marie Martinelli, fell asleep in the hands of the Lord Saturday morning, Jan. 29, 2022, at Wesley Village, where she was a resident.
Anna was born Jan. 26, 1949, in Duryea, to the late Joseph Vincent and Eleanor Matiko Martinelli.
Educated in Duryea, she graduated in 1966 from Northeast High School and in 1970 from East Stroudsburg State College with a degree in English education. Anna took her strong will and talents to the Easton Area school district, where she taught fourth grade. During that time, she contracted multiple sclerosis, and although her life was not easy, she relied on her strong Byzantine Catholic faith to guide her through many challenges.
She eventually came back to her roots and built a home in Duryea. Some of Anna's greatest joys in life were her houseplants, roses and her beloved cats.
In addition to her parents, Anna was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Martinelli, Dunmore; an unborn son; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Surviving are her brother, David Martinelli and wife, Judy, Duryea; sister, Mari Martinelli, Pittston Twp.; brother, John Martinelli and wife, Marianne, Madison Twp.; sister-in-law, Dobbie Martinelli, Dunmore; and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the excellent care given to Anna during her years at Wesley Village.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday from Bernard J. Piontek Funeral Home Inc., 204 Main St., Duryea, with Mass of the Divine Liturgy at 10:30 a.m. in St. Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church, 140 Church St., Old Forge, with the Rev. Sorry for your loss of your sister Anna Marie. She was such a brave girl going through life and accepted her illness. She always had a smile and I am sure she is reunited with your mother, father and Joseph. God surely welcomed Anna Marie with open arms and she is at peace.
