George Chapman Obituary

George Malcolm Chapman Sr., 86, of Douglasville, Ga., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023.

He was born May 31, 1936, in Wilkes-Barre, son of the late Mr. George Charles Chapman and the late Mrs. Ethel Mae Chapman. Mr. Chapman was employed by PG & W (Pennsylvania Gas & Water Company) and was a firefighter for the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department for 23 years. He enjoyed sports, especially NASCAR, football and baseball. He was a true handyman who would stop to help anybody. George never met a stranger. He liked to fish and camp, and he had a special love for model trains and gardening. He was a member of the National Guard for six years. George was a longtime member of Firwood United Methodist Church, Wilkes-Barre, and Bright Star United Methodist Church, Douglasville, Ga.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Chapman.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mrs. Barbara Chapman; daughters, Beverly (Daniel) Barry, Lincoln, Del.; Lisa (John) Rowski, Plymouth; sons, George Jr. (Mary Ellen) Chapman, Douglasville, Ga.; Neil (Susan) Chapman, Douglasville, Ga.; grandchildren, Nicholas, Kristen, Ashley, Dan Jr., Adam, Kevin, Alison, Lauren, Kendra and Dylan; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home, Douglasville, Ga. The memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home with the Rev. Orlando Evans officiating.

Flowers are accepted, but those desiring to do so may contribute to the Bright Star United Methodist Church. We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Gentiva Hospice for the wonderful care and support given to Mr. Chapman and his family.

Very sorry to hear about George´s passing. Please accept our sincere condolences . George was a great guy. He and my Dad were great friends. Now reunited, I´m sure they´re swapping stories again as they did for so many years at the firehouse.

George was a fellow firefighter and dear friend of my grandfather's. I'll fondly remember his visits with the old-timers up the River. In my memories they're tinkering or building something, joking and laughing the whole time. (A hand-written note George made reminding us to put our tools away in the right spots is still on the wall of our shed). His Lionel trains and his model town were so cool to us kids too. The Milz boys send their deepest condolences to all the Chapmans, George was a great guy.
