Helen Brogan, 73, of Avoca, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2021, at her home. She was born in Pittston Oct. 8, 1948, and was the daughter of the late William and Helen Spahalski Dempski.

Helen will long be remembered by her family, friends and community for her generosity of spirit. She was always willing to lend a hand to help, to provide a shoulder to lean on, to offer words to comfort, to extend her arms to embrace and to say prayers for the peace and healing of others. Her gentle smile, soft laugh, compassionate eyes and deep wisdom will remain blessings for those who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her in-laws, Thomas and Catherine Brogan; brother-in-law, John Tobin; nephews, Craig and David Jones; and niece, Lisa Jones Kutra.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, James Brogan; children, Shawn and his wife, Nicole, Avoca; Stacy Brogan Cassady and her husband, Skip, Stroudsburg; and Susan Brogan Thornton and her husband, Billy, California; sister, Mary Ann Tobin, Duryea; six grandchildren, Kyle Brogan and his wife, Ruby; Kaitlyn Brogan; Emma Cassady and Erin; Emily and Allie Thornton; sister, Mary Ann Tobin; sister-in-law, Mary Kay and her husband, Ned Jones; brother-in-law, Michael and his wife, Laurie Brogan; and many nieces.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Queen of the Apostles Parish, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca, with the Rev. Phillip Sladicka officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. until service time Thursday in Queen of the Apostles Parish. Family and friends who are attending the visitation or the Mass are strongly encouraged to abide by the CDC guidelines to take precautions and wear a facial mask when entering the church.

Stacy, my dear friend, and family, there truly are no words to say when such a tremendous loss occurs. You have been a pillar of strength and compassion throughout this entire ordeal. I know how much your mom loved and appreciated all of you. She raised a beautiful family who went on to have beautiful families of their own. A life well-lived and a compassionate soul. She will be greatly missed. Wishing all of you strength during this painful time.

Mrs. Brogan was the epitome of grace and loving kindness that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She was someone I truly looked up to, although she was much shorter than I. One of my most favorite childhood memories wouldn´t be if it wasn´t for her presence in my life. She was an amazing woman, and later the most kindest of neighbors. My daughter, Maggie, was even heartbroken to hear of her passing.

Mr. Brogan, if you ever need anything, anything at all, I´m not too far away. There will be a missing piece in your life, that is for certain, but may your lifetime of happy golden memories bring you comfort. You two were something we all hope to attain in life.

Helen will be missed by so so many.
