My heart goes out to family and friends for your loss. Jim was an a selfless and beautiful soul. Always helping out wherever he could. He used to bring us goodies that he baked all the time at turkey hill. Always with a smile and a story. You will be missed my friend. Fly high as everyone that knew and loved you, knows that you were blessed with your angel wings even down here on earth.

I had the honor of serving with Jim while in the military overseas in Augsburg, Germany.
We had the same type of job and though he was never my supervisor, I always knew he was someoneI could go to if I needed help. As time went on we became very good friends and he came to visit my husband and I after I got out of the service.
Life got busy but we stayed in touch via email and like so many others, the "annual Christmas card"!!!!!!
To Jim's loved ones, I hope you know what a special person Jim was. As for me, I will always remember Jim as "one of the great ones"! RIP dear friend!!!

I met Jim in the 1990s at Dallas High School, when I coached his son Jimmy in volleyball. We needed an Assistant Coach, and Jim loved to play volleyball, so becoming Dallas´ Assistant Volleyball Coach so he could be with his son more was a natural fit. "Mr. Gavin" (as all of the kids called him) ended up being the glue that held our program together in those years that we coached together. The kids loved him, the parents respected him, the referees enjoyed his good nature, and I couldn´t have done any of it without him ... (oh yeah, and he was the snack bar guru, able to use coupons to their fullest!). Jim put our program on the map in those years, helping to take us to the playoffs over and over. His good nature always brought reality to our competitive sport with him reminding me through the tense matches that "they´re just kids, let them have fun!". That was Jim ... always for the kids. We kept in touch over the years through volleyball coaching and officiating, and Christmas cards ... with each one always having a funny quip.
I´m going to miss seeing "Mr. Gavin" on the sidelines of volleyball courts in the Wyoming Valley ... but I know I´ll see him in Heaven again someday, because Jim accepted Jesus as his personal Lord and Saviour ... and that makes all the difference.
We'll be praying for grace and comfort for the whole family ...

Coach Gavin, you were the kindest person ever. Serving your country for many years, then retiring to become a volleyball coach where your love was shown through everything you did. You were our Sergeant, our coach, our volleyball dad, our baker, our best friend. Your love for the sport was so visible to everyone. May you forever rest in peace. This season is for you
