Jerome David Chismer

Jerome D. Chismer of North Street, Luzerne, entered into eternal rest Wednesday.

Jerome was born on Aug. 19, 1949, in Ashley, and was raised in Luzerne. He was the son of Stella Chipego Chismer and the late Adam Chismer.

He attended Sacred Heart Elementary School, where he was an altar boy for six years. He graduated from Luzerne High School, Class of 1967. He was a graduate of the first class of the Wyoming Valley West School District jointure.

Jerome served in the Army Reserve 402nd military police, Wilkes-Barre, for six years. He served with the 402nd during the Agnes flood of 1972 evacuating people.

He was a graduate of Luzerne County Community College, Nanticoke, with an Associate in Applied Science degree in business management, Class of 1976. He also advanced his education at Misericordia University and King's College.

Jerome was certified by Pa. Lethal Weapons Training Act 235 and continued to work in the security field throughout his career.

He had been employed by Mansfield State University, Dallas School District, Globe Security, Geisinger System Services, Air Products and various security and detective agencies throughout the valley.

Jerome loved music, especially the Beatles and would entertain playing the electric and acoustical guitar. He fostered his love of music by teaching his nephew, Jay, the fundamentals of the guitar.

He loved to travel to state parks throughout the United States and had once traveled across country in a Volkswagen with his high school friend.

Jerome loved nature and liked to fish, hunt and go camping. He enjoyed dancing, reading and took pleasure relating his travel experiences.

He was a great conversationalist and found some humor in any event. He accepted things as they were.

Jerome was preceded in death by his father, Adam, in 1989.

He is survived by his mother, Stella Chipego Chismer, at home; sister, Dorothy M. Karavis and husband, Joseph, Hanover Township; sister, Jeanette E. Vasil and husband, John, Exeter; very special and loving nephew, Jay J. Vasil, Slippery Rock.

Private funeral services will be held Monday from George A. Strish Funeral Home, 269 Bennett St., Luzerne. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 in Holy Family Parish, 574 Bennett St., Luzerne, with the Rev. Richard Fox as celebrant.

Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Swoyersville. There are no public calling hours.
