Lawrence Istvan Obituary

Well-known and respected Wilkes-Barre dentist, Lawrence T. Istvan, D.D.S., passed into eternal life on Tuesday morning, Aug. 25, 2020, while in the care of the Residential Hospice Inpatient Unit at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, following a recent illness.

Born Aug. 6, 1927, in the Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre, he recently celebrated his 93rd birthday. He was the second youngest child of the late Joseph Matthew and Mary France Istvan.

He attended the former Calvin Elementary and Guthrie schools in Wilkes-Barre before graduating in 1945 from James M. Coughlin High School, where he excelled on the track and football teams.

Following his high school graduation, he enlisted with the U.S. Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Forster (DE-334), which was deployed at the end of World War II in the Pacific Theatre.

At the time of his honorable discharge, Dr. Istvan held the rank of seaman first class.

He returned home following his military service, and with the help of the G.I. bill attended King's College. He graduated in 1952 with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. He married the former Dolores Cross and settled in the Rolling Mill Hill section of the city.

Following his college graduation, he relocated to Syracuse, N.Y., where he worked as a chemist for Bristol Labs until 1955. Later that year, Dr. Istvan attended dental school at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a member of the Delta Sigma Delta fraternity. He graduated in 1959.

Returning to his familial roots, he opened his dental practice at 124 Grove St., later moving just across the street to 143 Grove St., in the Rolling Mill Hill section of the city.

For 48 years, Dr. Istvan served patients from all over Northeastern Pennsylvania and beyond. However, his beloved Rolling Mill Hill remained his practice's home base. Over the years, many patients entrusted Dr. Istvan with their dental care because of his high quality work and professional artistry.

His practice was an integral tile in the mosaic of the energetic Rolling Mill Hill neighborhood, which included the former Wyoming Valley Hospital, Passeri's Market and the medical offices of the equally respected Drs. Kistler, Decker and Chung; the Boyd Dodson Elementary School, a town library, numerous churches of various denominations and Ziggy's and Mrs. Nolan's candy stores. This neighborhood was self-sufficient and Dr. Istvan's offices were located in the heart of it all.

On March 31, 2007, at the age of 79, Dr. Istvan treated his last patient.

Throughout his life, he was actively involved with the Lions Club and Masonic Lodge and was a member of Fox Hill Country Club, Exeter.

His passions included big band music, WWII history, the opera, football and golf. He traveled the world, but his favorite destination was his home.

Dr. Istvan was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Dolores Cross, in 1973; his second wife, the former Jacqueline Rioux-Klenner, in 2001; brothers Cyril and Edward Istvan; sister, Col. Dorothy Istvan; three half-sisters, Margaret Brown, Ann Istvan, Helen Carvin; and his lifelong close friend, Irv Langel.

Left to cherish their wonderful memories are his daughter, Deborah Istvan McLain, Jefferson Twp.; grandchildren, Robert McLain and Alexandra McLain; stepchildren, Kevin Klenner and Jayne Klenner; and her son, Giles Moore; several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends; and may former patients.

Due to the restrictions of the current health crisis, there will be no formal visitation.

Relatives and and friends are invited to join Debbie and her family for graveside committal services at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery, 1594 S. Main St., Hanover Twp. Those attending are kindly asked to assemble in the parking area of John V. Morris Family Funeral Home, 625 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, by 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Thomas Looney, C.S.C., of King's College, and the Rev. Mr. Joseph Devizia, permanent deacon to Our Lady of Hope Parish, Wilkes-Barre, will serve as co-celebrants for the Rite of Committal.

John V. Morris Family Funeral Homes Inc. is honored to care for their cousin, Dr. Larry, and his family at this time.

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your father. He was truly an unsung hero of the community. I know everyone in the area went to Dr. Istvan as their dentist.
I remember going to him as a child.
I wasn't afraid to go because he treated you as a family member.
It was a great honor for me as the Mayor of Wilkes Barre to present him a Proclamation from the City of Wilkes Barre for his commitment and dedication to the residents of the community. He truly deserved it.
You should be bery proud, fo he left his mark on the community..

With deepest sympathy,
Tony

Dr Istvan was a lifelong friend of my mom's family (Langel family from North Wilkes- Barre). She, her brothers and Larry went to Guthrie grade school and Coughlin High school.

I was a patient of his going back to the 1960s and 1970s and I remember the local WNAK radio station playing 1940s and 1950s music while Dr. Istvan hummed to big band and swing era songs as he provided dental care. My son David, at the age of 9, was one of his last patients with his last dental visit being in March 2007, when Dr. Istvan retired. David looked forward to receiving the Great Dental Checkup certificates signed by Dr. Istvan at each visit and he still has each one.

I will fondly remember Dr. Istvan as a polite, gentle, caring, respectful and dignified man who valued tradition, family and friends.

Debby
I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your father. He was truly a great man.
He was an icon in the neighbourhood.
I know everyone went to Dr. Istvan as their dentist. It wasn't frightful going to him as a child, because he made you feel like family. Things like that you always remember.
It was a great honor for me as Mayor of Wilkes Barre to present him a Proclamation from the City of Wilkes Barre for his commitment and dedication to the residents of the community. He surely deserved it.
May God bless your family.

With deepest sympathy,
Tony

We are so very sorry for your loss, may God bless you and strengthen you and your family during this very difficult time. While we did not know Larry well, we feel he was a kindred spirit in reading about his exceptional life. Both my husband, Anthony Istvan (son of Daniel Istvan, grandson of Anne Istvan) and I were also Naval officers and proud veterans. Larry sounded like like an incredible man that left an indelible mark on his family and community. We are truly sorry we did not know him better. Our heartfelt prayers go out to you. Farewell and following seas, Godspeed Larry!

I was about 17 when I first went to Dr Istvan.
He was an extremely kind and gentle man. I remember going to his office every two weeks or so to pay on our family's bill. Over the years, we got to know his family and Debbie took piano lessons from my Mother.
In later years, we had a friendship and he was always supportive when family members passed or when my wife was having medical issues.
We were very sorry to hear of his passing.

Debbie, I am so sorry for your loss. Your Dad was a wonderful man. He was my families' dentist for as long as he was in practice. We all thought of him as a member of our family. I know how much he will be missed by you, your family and all of us who had the honor and pleasure of knowing him.

Very sorry to hear that Dr.Istvan passed away. I remember as a teenager visiting his office for the first time and he patiently explained his equipment to ease my nerves. He was so gentle in his work, that I had numerous fillings over the years and I handled it without novicane. After about 30 years of his good services we moved away to another state and my new dentists repeatedly complimented his fine work.Dr.Istvan always had a friendly smile, his favorite music playing, and sometimes a whistle or hum as he worked. A fine gentlemen and professional.

I knew Uncle Larry via his brother and my father in law, Edward Istvan. I was often told stories of their childhood which were filled with hard work and challenges, but also of laughter, love and strong family ties.

Service to this country was a foundation shared by Larry and his siblings. Larry, Ed and Cyril served in the U.S. Navy and his sister Dorothy had a distinguished career in the U.S. Army. Their military careers demonstrated their courage and dedication to others. I am grateful for their service to our country.

The Istvan's were taught by their parents the importance of strong family values which was passed down through Uncle Larry's daughter, Debbie McClain and his grandchildren.

Though I met Uncle Larry late in his life, I so enjoyed his smile, generosity and warmth he extended to me and my children. My life has been blessed by knowing him.

May the bond that held the Istvan family together on earth be felt again in heaven.

Larry and my dad, Irv Langel, were lifelong friends from 5 years of age until my dad passed away at 90 three years ago. Larry was so bereft and heartbroken, as their bond was something most are not blessed with...best friends for 85 years. And with day to day contact, phone calls, rides out the lake, golf outings and regular lunches at Ollie's, The Dough Company, Dukey's etc. and dinners at Red Lobster or Olive Garden, (one of Larry's favorites was chicken Alfredo). Larry was our family dentist growing up and as a child, as much as I was afraid, he relaxed me with his soft humming while I was in the chair and when it was time for the dreaded Novocain needle he called it a shot of 7-Up. :)He was my friend too and I loved him. My only consolation with losing him is finally after 3 long years, he and my dad are together again in the bye and bye, perhaps at this very moment walking the greens of heaven.
