Nicolina Rita Andrews

Nicolina Rita Finocchiaro Andrews, 92, passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at home in the loving care of her family.

Daughter of the late Serafina Pugliesi Finocchiaro and Sebastian Finocchiaro, she was born Sept. 29, 1928, in Philadelphia, one of nine siblings.

Lena (as she was known to her family) or Nickie (as she was known to her friends) graduated from South Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1946.

She was the first in her family to graduate from college with a B.S. degree in pharmacy from Temple University in 1950. She was one of the first women to break the glass ceiling in pharmacy and while it was difficult to find employment because many employers did not want to hire a woman, she persevered and was eventually hired by Temple University Hospital Pharmacy for several years before moving to Wilkes-Barre with her husband, Dr. Peter J. Andrews. Peter and Nickie established his family medicine practice in Miners Mills in 1960 and worked together until their retirement in 1999. Nickie served as pharmacist, receptionist and bookkeeper for the practice and was known for her efficiency, organizational skills and old-fashioned common sense.

She was a member of the American Pharmaceutical Association, Pennsylvania Pharmaceutical Association, Pennsylvania Medical Society Alliance and Mercy Hospital Auxiliary. She served on many committees for the Wilkes-Barre Area School District and was president of the St. Clair PTA, Dan Flood PTA, Coughlin High School PTSA and Wilkes-Barre Area PTA Council. In addition, she was treasurer of the Miners Mills Athletic Association, Coughlin Band Parents Association, Miners Mills Citizens Action Committee and Blessed Sacrament Altar and Rosary Society. For 12 years, she was the local chair of the Teenagers March on Leukemia.

During her life, Nickie was honored for her work on several occasions, including with the Miners Mills Citizen of the Year Award in 1977; Appreciation Award from St. Clair PTA and Friends in 1977; Life Membership of the National PTA in 1984; Appreciation Award from the Wilkes-Barre Girls' Softball League in 1986; and Coughlin Band Parents Association in 1988. In 2001, she received the Key to the City of Wilkes-Barre from Mayor Thomas McGroarty for service to the Miners Mills Civic Action Committee.

In her spare time, she loved handwork and was talented at sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, needlepoint and crewel. She was also an avid quilter, creating many beautiful quilts for her children and grandchildren. Nickie was a talented cook and faithfully made her signature spaghetti sauce and meatballs every Sunday and special homemade ravioli for every major holiday.

Nickie was preceded in death by her parents; seven of her siblings, Sarah Alberici, Charlie Finocchiaro, Mary Finocchiaro, Peter Finocchiaro, Paul Finocchiaro, Isadore Finocchiaro and Verna Hill; and her husband of almost 65 years, Dr. Peter Andrews Sr.

She will be greatly missed by her sister, Josephine Kolp (Frank); her eight children, Annamarie Andrews (Art Wood); Patricia Hoover (Dale); Dr. Peter Andrews Jr. (Gail); Paul Andrews Esq. (Nancy Sachitano Esq.); Dr. John Andrews (Brenda); Dr. Joseph Andrews (Patty); Saralyn Sonn; and Nicole Tauber (Pete); her 21 grandchildren, Michael Wood, Esq.; Katherine Wood; Stephanie Hoover; Dale Hoover; Brian Hoover; Elizabeth Andrews; Peter Andrews III; Dr. Samuel Andrews; Emily Andrews; Sarah Andrews, PT, DPT; John Andrews; Matthew Andrews; Nicholas Andrews; Kristen Andrews; Zachery Andrews; Margaret Andrews; Alexandra Sonn; Thomas Sonn; Alicia Tauber; Kayla Tauber; and Amanda Tauber; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Nickie was a member of the former Blessed Sacrament Church for more than 50 years, St. Benedict's Church and a current member of Corpus Christi Parish, West Pittston.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen, 39 E. Jackson St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701; the Social Concerns Committee of Corpus Christi Parish, 605 Luzerne Ave., West Pittston, PA 18643; or Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Dr., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.

To the Andrews children,my sincerest condolences on the passing of your Mom. I have great memories of her visits during Parent /Teachers night. Rarely did we talk about any of you ( it wasn't needed ) but we talked about so many other things. Even when you all had graduated she often came by to say hello. I know I missed those times and can only imagine the loss you all feel. She was indeed a GREAT Mom and Lady

I´m so very sorry for the loss of your beloved Mom. She was a wonderful lady who always made me laugh. Nicole your mom was always involved with everything. We had so many good times playing softball and all of those softball banquets. All good memories. I´m sure your family will be watched over with your Guardian Angel watching down. Love to your family

My deepest sympathy goes to the entire family. Mrs. Andrews was an amazing woman. I don´t think anyone will ever be able to fill her shoes. I feel lucky that I did have the pleasure of knowing this unique woman. Your loss is a big one, but having known her and her love and energy, she will be alongside each and everyone of you to help you in step of your lives. Memory Eternal and God bless and grant you the strength she imparted on you.
