Roger Slator Obituary

Roger's pain ended Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at Timber Ridge Nursing Facility.

Born June 24, 1934, in Queens Village, New York, N.Y., he was the son of Leslie B. and Amy Sammis Slator.

Roger spent his early years growing up on a farm and throughout his life loved to work the "earth."

He graduated from Newfield Central School, Newfield, N.Y., attended Cornell University extension, Wilkes College and LCCC.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Leslie B. Jr., and an older brother, John H.

Roger served his county in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, as part of the occupation forces in Fuerth, Germany. After the military he served his printing apprenticeship at Journal Courier, New Haven, Conn. He later moved to Wilkes-Barre and became a printer at the Wilkes-Barre Publishing Co. from 1964 to 1978. Roger was one of the original founders of The Citizens' Voice newspaper and served as production director from 1978 to his retirement in 2000. He embraced new technology in every facet of the newspaper business. He was a member of Sylvania Lodge 354, F&A.M., Caldwell Consistory Irem Temple and the Swoyersville American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanna; sons, Douglas, David and Timothy; daughter, Kellie; grandson, Christopher; nephews, Thomas Slator and Daniel Slator; nieces, Terry Duffy, Rebecca Crumb and Ruth Slator; and his sister-in-law, Ginny.

Roger spent his retirement years enjoying his pond and his gardening. He was accompanied by his beloved pets, Snicker and Snuggles, who spent their days with him in the sun. He loved to read and took his Kindle everywhere. Roger was an avid Eagles fan and his one wish was to see them win a super bowl.

Thanks to Dr. Kimberly Kovalick, who cared for him with love and compassion.

Funeral services with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Mount Olivet Cemetery, 612 Mount Olivet Road, Carverton.
