Thomas O'Leary Obituary

Thomas Robert O'Leary Jr. (Thom), 68, a resident of Kingston, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2018.

Thom was born on June 23, 1949, in Kingston, to the late Thomas R. O'Leary Sr. and Catherine Muldowney O'Leary. He graduated from Kingston High School in 1967, the U.S. Army Infantry Training in 1969, and also King's College in 1976 with a B.S. in biology. During his military career, he served as an Airborne Army Ranger, a Green Beret, Special Forces Medic and served in Iraq with the National Guard 109th Field Artillery. He retired from the Army as a captain.

He transitioned into civilian life as an insurance salesman with Western & Southern Life, and then as a butcher for several area supermarkets. Thom was a member of VFW Post 283 and also a former post commander, board member and most recently, financial officer for Kingston American Legion Post 395.

Thom was a wonderful family man who enjoyed fishing, reading, gardening, cooking and would generously volunteer his time to family and friends. He had a passion for history and loved to watch the morning game shows to test his knowledge with family and friends.

Thom is survived by his loving wife, Flora O'Leary; children, Patricia O'Leary, Thomas O'Leary III, and Catherine O'Leary; siblings, Julie O'Leary Bunn and Patrick O'Leary.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday from Maher-Collins Funeral Home, 360 N. Maple Ave., Kingston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Church of St. Ignatius Loyola. Interment, with military honors, will be in the parish cemetery, Pringle. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

A reception will be held afterward at Kingston American Legion Post 395. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Thom's life. The O'Leary family would like to thank everyone for their support and understanding during this time. As he would often say "God Bless and Watch the Ice."

Flora and family - All of you will be in my prayers. Thom was always a dependable and a professional soldier during our OIF II deployment in 2004. The family's sacrifice of loaning him to us for a year made all of us a stronger family and we will be forever grateful - Thank you for Thom's service and commitment to the PA National Guard and our Nation.
