William "Bill" Volkel, 93, formerly of Range Road, Hunlock Creek, died Wednesday morning, March 17, 2021, at Wolf Run Village, Hughesville.
Born Jan. 23, 1928, in Nanticoke, he was a son of the late Walter and Elsie Katzmann Volkel.
He attended the former Shickshinny High School until the age of 16, when he entered the U.S. Merchant Marine during World War II. He served in the Merchant Marine until he entered the U.S. Army, and was stationed in Korea before the Korean War. Following his service, he was first a coal miner, then a Public Service Bus driver in New Jersey, then worked as a laborer in Union Local 130 throughout the Wyoming Valley. If someone complained or was having a bad day, Bill would say, "It sure beats loading coal." He was a member of the Shickshinny American Legion Post 495, Benton VFW, and the Izaak Walton Farm Inc. Bill liked fishing, and was a lifelong Yankees fan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Dorothy Lipka, to whom he was married for 56 years; and brothers, Robert, Carl and Doran.
Surviving are two sons, Gary and his wife, Linda, North Catasauqua; and Barry and his wife, Kimberly, Berwick; two grandchildren, Derek and his fiancée, Meghan Barry; and Shea; and a special friend, Fran Dierolf.
A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Monday at Mayo Funeral Home Inc., 77 N. Main St., Shickshinny, followed by a funeral service at noon with the Rev. Mike Bodek officiating. Due to the current restrictions, there will be specific protocols in place, including a requirement to wear a mask if you are planning to attend.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Bloomingdale Cemetery.
Shickshinny American Legion Post 495 will conduct military services at the funeral home.
