Don Dittemore Obituary

A Memorial Service and Reception will be held Saturday at 12:00 noon October 2, 2010 for Don and Helen Dittemore at the Ramada Convention Center, Downtown Topeka. The family invites you to join them in the Mansion Rooms at the Ramada for sharing good memories, a showing of Don's acceptance speech into the Washburn Athletic Hall of Fame, fellowship and food. Their cremated remains will be inurned by the family at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Helen passed away July 28, 2007 and Don passed away October 2, 2008 in Palm Springs, Calif. Helen Louise Dittemore was born on May 15, 1920, to Bill and Marie Crandall in Axtell, Kan. She attended Seneca High School. Don and Helen were married on November 23, 1939 in Seneca, Kan. Donald P. Dittemore was born March 11, 1915, in Harlingen, Tex. to Lester P. and Nell C. Dittemore. Don attended Topeka High where he played on the 1932 state championship basketball team. He went on to Washburn where he was a four year letterman in basketball and a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. After graduating from Washburn, he took his first teaching- coaching job in Seneca, Kan. Don returned to Topeka as Principal of Holliday, Crane, Jardine, Landon, Roosevelt Jr. Highs and an Asst. Principal of Topeka High School. He was inducted into the Washburn University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988 and was President of the Downtown Optimist in 1960-61. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Dianne and George Heitman, Patty and Don Gaddis of Palm Desert, Calif. and Helen's sister, Norma Jean Larkin of Rapid City, S. Dak. Don and Helen, both, were friends of my parents Dick and Dura Clark. I grew up hearing stories of the two of them as well as their daughter, Pattie. I don't know why I thought of Don tonight, but thanks to Google, I found this memorial. I am glad to see this.

Mr. Dittemore was my principal at Holiday so many years ago. I have been an educator for 40 years and I am confident that Mr. Dittemore influenced my philosophy of education. He was a kind, wise man. Everyone loved him dearly. What wonderful memories and such a fine example and mentor.

Don Dittemore was a great educator who could handle almost any challenge with skill and diplomacy. He was a leader and had a positive effect upon the Topeka Public Schools. I respected him most highly. He was a friend to all.
