Duane Callies Obituary

Duane L. Callies, 73, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006 at Aldersgate Village, Topeka, KS. He was born April 28, 1933 in Norfolk, NE. the son of Lawrence and Myrtle Johnson Callies. He was a 1950 graduate of Newman Grove High School. After high school, he farmed briefly and attended Wayne State Teachers College. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1953 and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant before being discharged in 1957. He attended the Central Technical Institute in Kansas City. He graduated with an Associates of Science degree in electronic engineering and began work for the Menninger Foundation in 1962, retiring in 1995. He married Dorothy Thompson on July 2, 1960 in Newman Grove, NE. She survives. He was preceded in death by his brother, Rodney Callies in 1985. Other survivors include two daughters, Ann Callies, Lawrence and Jill Comcowich and her husband Kevin , Papillion, NE; a sister, Ruth Love, Alva, OK and a niece, Janet Foster, Alexandria, VA. Mr. Callies will lie in state after 1:00 pm today at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will greet friends from 7:00 to 8:30 pm this evening. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, Oct. 13 at Crestview United Methodist Church with burial to follow at 11:00 am, Monday, Oct. 16 in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Newman Grove, NE. I worked with Duane many years on the Fair Employment Committee at TMF. He was a solid dependable fellow that I admired greatly; Topeka is less for his passing.
