Lereta Van Vleck

Lereta G. Hoskinson Shaffer Van Vleck, 84, formerly of Topeka passed away November 29, 2011 from complications of Congestive Heart Failure. She died at Pinnacle Ridge Rehab & Nursing Home in Olathe, KS. She was born 10/11/1927 in Blue Rapids, KS. She was the daughter of Emmett M. and Alta M. (Ricks) Hoskinson. On 3/30/1946 Lereta married Alfred Shaffer, divorced 4/9/1954. She married Harold E. Van Vleck Sr. of Topeka, KS 7/29/1955 and were together until his death on 11/22/1986. Lereta loved to quilt. She was a former member of The Topeka Capital Quilters Guild in Topeka, KS and later of the Miami County Quilters Guild in Paola, KS. She made quilts for her family even after she lost most of her vision. She also crocheted and knitted. She was a former member of Helena 210 Order of Eastern Star and Beauceant. She was a former member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. She also attended the East Topeka Senior Citizen Center where she made many friends. A loving Mother, Grandmother, Sister & Friend, she will be missed dearly. She is survived by her daughter, Anita (Shaffer) Lickteig (Pete), her son, Dennis Shaffer (Dee) and her step-son Harold Van Vleck Jr (Barb), her half brother, Jimmy Spidell (Phyllis). She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Terry Lickteig, Andrew & Aaron Shaffer, Derek Van Vleck and Brook (Van Vleck) August and 2 great grandchildren, Vanessa Van Vleck and Justin August. Lereta was preceded in death by her parents, her husband (Harold), her half sister Jeanette Frakes, and a grandchild Lereta A Lickteig. She was cremated and will have graveside services at The Carbondale Cemetery in Carbondale, KS. Private family services will be held at a later date.
