Stephen Leweke Obituary

Steve Leweke, 68, passed away Saturday, January 23, 2021, at Rolling Hills Nursing Home in Topeka, Kansas.

He was born April 17, 1952, in Kansas City, Missouri to Donald and Margaret "Peggy" (Osborn) Leweke.

Steve graduated from Topeka West in 1970.

At the age of 19, Steve suffered the loss of his right arm after a workplace accident but he persevered, earning a degree in business from Washburn University.

Steve's love of sports also continued. He was an athlete in the Paralympics, winning medals in downhill skiing. He later became an avid golfer, a sport at which he also excelled.

While living in Lawrence, Steve volunteered for various charitable events, and especially enjoyed providing Thanksgiving meals to families in need.

Steve was known for his lively personality, active lifestyle and dare-devil spirit. Throughout his life he cultivated a large circle of friends.

Steve was preceded in death by his father and brother-in-law, Bill Henderson. He is survived by his mother, Peggy; sister, Terri Henderson; brothers, Jeff and Dan (Cheryl) Leweke; his niece, Amy (Stephen "Biz") Lambert; nephews, Jake Easterberg, Grayson (Samantha), Sterling, and Holden Leweke; and great-nephews William and Jack Lambert.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Doorstep: 1119 SW 10th Ave. Topeka, KS 66604-1105, a partner of Crestview United Methodist Church.

I went to high school with Steve, lived with him for two summers, and worked with him at Goodyear. The thing I remember most about him was how positive he was, never letting anything stand in is way. I never heard or saw Steve in any way consider himself disabled from the loss of his arm, as evidenced by his mastery of skiing and so many other things. He was a good friend to many people, and knew how to enjoy all life had to offer. Steve will be missed and I salute his great spirit
