Joseph Kent Farquhar, son of William Perry Farquhar and Mary Elizabeth (Mitchell) Farquhar, was born on August 6, 1934, in Clarinda, Iowa. He grew up in rural College Springs and graduated from Amity High School. Joe then furthered his education attending Tarkio College. On October 5, 1956, Joe was united in marriage to Ruth Catherine Winkler at the Methodist Church in Sidney, Iowa. This union was blessed with three daughters, Ellen, Emily, and Lori Jo. In 1957, Joe was drafted into the United States Army and served his country for almost 2 years. During his time in the service, Joe was stationed in Germany and then received his honorable discharge in 1959. Following Joe's military service, he and Ruth returned to College Springs where he continued to farm with his father on the family farm and later added farming the Winkler farm as well. Faith, family, farming, and friends were the priorities in Joe and Ruth's lives. They demonstrated this with service to church, community, and family in so many ways. Joe was an active member of the College Springs Presbyterian Church in various roles through the years, he served as a board member of Atchinson-Holt Co-op in Rock Port, Missouri and on the board of directors for the US Bank in Tarkio, Missouri. He believed that he was to be a good steward and caretaker of the land and livestock. He enjoyed caring for the land and continued to make improvements through the years. He was proud to receive the Century Farm certificates for both his mother's and father's farms in 2010. Joe believed in truth and God's Word. He was a man of his word; he was helpful to many, and he was generous with all he had. He loved history - particularly about the local area and loved sharing this information with others. He liked to create things, often tinkering on some project in his shop. He often said he was so very blessed, and it was not because of anything that he had done. He was an example to all of humility and generosity, and we are blessed by this. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ruth in 2020; sister Marjorie Zwart; brother-in-law, Robert Zwart and sister-in-law Mary Louise Winkler. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Ellen (Dan) McClure of Clarinda, Emily (Don) Nease of Denver, Colorado, and Lori Jo (Mark) Lawson of Bellevue, Nebraska; granddaughters, Catherine Nease, Patricia Nease (Nick Kalejs) and Amanda Lawson, nephew Jeff (Terri) Zwart of Aspen, Colorado; along with other extended relatives and many friends.
