She was the daughter of Martha (Mueller) Otte and Orval Otte. Vera was born on her mother's birthday and her arrival was a wonderful birthday gift. Vera continued to be a gift to others throughout her life. She lived the adage, "It is better to give than to receive". Vera's happy childhood years were spent on the family farm northwest of Clarinda. She has three siblings, Carl Otte, Irma (Otte) Sunderman, and Ruth (Otte) Miller. Vera attended Immanuel Lutheran parochial school through 8th grade. She graduated from Clarinda High School in 1960. Friendships that developed in school and through life were important to Vera. Vera thrived on sharing humor and laughter. Following high school graduation Vera worked one year at the JC Penny store located on the SW corner of the square in Clarinda. April 30, 1961, she married her high school sweetheart and the love-of-her-life Paul Fastenau. They established their home on an acreage northwest of Clarinda. This union was blessed with two children, Jeff Fastenau and Julie (Fastenau) Fast. Throughout their marriage Jeff and Julie were the most important part of Paul and Vera's lives. They have three grandchildren: Paige Fast, Allison (Fast) Bix, and Ethan Fast. Vera treasured every second she spent with her grandchildren and they participated together in many activities (sports, 4-H, shopping, Craft Carnival, etc.). Paul and Vera were married 59 years. Following her one year employment with JC Penny, Vera spent the remainder of her career at Lisle Corporation in Clarinda where she initially worked as a Receptionist and later worked in the Purchasing Department. Vera loved her job and she retired in 2016, following 55 years of employment. She also truly enjoyed spending time at home and she cherished social time with friends. Vera's parents instilled in her a dedication to God and she was a faithful lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Clarinda. Vera was a breast cancer survivor of 22 years and every day she tried to live life to the fullest. Recently Vera developed Acute Myeloid Leukemia and she fought the disease to her fullest capability. She passed away on February 8, 2021, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, NE with her family by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents, Orval and Martha (Mueller) Otte, brother-in-law Dale Fastenau, and brother-in-law Bernard Fastenau.
