Ellen Daniels

Graveside services for Ellen Douglas ("Chick") Gorton Daniels were held Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at the Belzoni City Cemetery, Belzoni, Mississippi.
A lifelong resident of Belzoni and a communicant of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Chick was a devoted wife and mother of three children. Her husband of 59 years, John Honig Daniels, Jr. preceded her in death by 83 days.
Her primary and secondary education was fulfilled in the Greenville Public School system, graduating from Greenville High School whereupon she attended the University of Mississippi. While at Ole Miss she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority, a SAE sweetheart and a sponsor of her future husband's college ROTC platoon.
She married John in January of 1951 at St. James Episcopal Church, Greenville, Mississippi.
Upon their return to Belzoni, Chick was very involved in both civic and church related activities, the Flower and Altar Guild of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Belzoni Garden Club, Delta Council Cotton Wives and many other community organizations; including a very active involvement in the early 1960's movement of the Republican Party in Mississippi; opening a campaign office in downtown Belzoni during the campaigns of Rubel Phillips and Senator Barry Goldwater.
Chick was preceded in death by her parents, Jennie Lee Wharton Gorton and Doy DeWhitt Gorton.
She is survived by two siblings, June Gorton Hammond (Vernon) of Greenville, Mississippi and D. Gorton (Jane) of Carbondale, Illinois. She is also survived by three children: John H. Daniels, III (Ellen) of Greenville; Jonas Jones Daniels (Sally) of Silver City and Mary Schiele Daniels Scanlon (Pat, Jr.) of Jackson. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Ellen Douglas Daniels Alves (Chris), Jane Winton Daniels, Katherine Elizabeth Daniels, William Jonas Daniels, Patrick Daniels Scanlon, Duncan Myers Scanlon and one great-grandchild, Lanier Montgomery Alves.
The family would like to express their sincerest appreciation to the staff and caregivers in Belzoni and at Legacy Manor, Greenville, Mississippi, who lovingly cared for her during her lengthy illness; and, the trusting advice, care and guidance of Drs. Lenoir, Cirilli, and Gorton.
