Frank Shanahan Obituary

Mr. Frank E. Shanahan, Jr., 84, passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at the St. Dominic Jackson Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He had been a resident of the State Veteran's Home in Jackson. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date with interment in the Natchez Trace Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Shanahan was a native of Vicksburg, Mississippi and was the son of the late Frank Sr. and Perle Williamson Shanahan. He attended school in Vicksburg and graduated from Carr Central High School. He joined the US Army and served in the Engineer Battalion. After the war he married and went to Ole Miss where he received a Business Degree and Law Degree. He became the first Executive Secretary of the Workman's Compensation Commission. He was called back into the service joining the Judge Advocate General Corps.
He practiced law in Vicksburg for many years and was Warren County's Representative in the Legislature in the 50's and 60's. He also practiced in Pascagoula until he joined the Attorney General as an assistant assigned to the Highway Department. He and his wife made their home in Crossgates and were members of Crossgates United Methodist Church. In later years, the Shanahan's lived at Sunnybrook Retirement Home in Madison.
Mr. Shanahan is survived by his wife of 62 years, June Nailor Shanahan of Madison; sons, John M. Shanahan and wife, Janice Gober of Bradenton, FL and Robert P. Shanahan and wife, Ava Hay of Memphis, TN.; two grandchildren, Ryan and Joe Shanahan of Cookeville, TN; and one brother, James Lewis Shanahan and wife, Ann of Trophy Club, TX.

Frank was a good man. I remember his beautiful voice well.

I think Choctaw Books still has copies of Downhome Poetry, the collection of poems Frank published about ten years ago. (601) 352 7281. He wrote some Ogden Nash type stuff--rhyming, not very formal, always good-natured, much like the man himself.
