Jack W. Dempsey

Jackson

Jack Weldon Dempsey, of Jackson, passed away on September 4, 2014 at St. Dominic's Hospital. He was 85 years old.

Mr. Dempsey was born in Millsaps, Texas in 1929. As the son of an oil field engineer, he spent his early years traveling in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California, and Arkansas. He was a graduate of the Missouri Military Academy, and served as a Battalion Sergeant Major in the United States Army.

Mr. Dempsey was employed by U.S. Steel and O'Neal Steel, before co-founding Specialty Metals Supply Co. He retired in 1996.

A 60-year resident of Jackson, Mr. Dempsey was active in numerous clubs and organizations in the Jackson area over the years, including the Mississippi Archaeological Society, the Civil War Roundtable, the Mississippi Writer's Guild, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science Foundation, the Mississippi Museum of Art, and the Fondren Civitan Club. With his white hair and full beard, Mr. Dempsey was known for portraying Santa Claus at Christmas parties for area libraries, churches, and businesses.

Mr. Dempsey is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marianne Lee Dempsey of Jackson; his son, Lee Dempsey, daughter-in-law, Phyllis Dempsey, and grandson, Brian Dempsey, all of Charlotte, North Carolina; and two nephews and three nieces.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 6, at Broadmeadow United Methodist Church in Jackson. The family will greet visitors at 10:00 AM. Sebrell Funeral Home of Ridgeland is in charge of the arrangements.

The family would like to thank Dr. William Loper of MEA Clinic of Ridgeland, Courtney Stokley of Sta-Home Nursing of Madison, and the staff of St. Dominic's Hospital for their care and compassion.

Memorials may be made to the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, or Broadmeadow United Methodist Church.

Lee I never knew your father was born in Texas! And Millsap, what a coincidence! A wonderful eulogy. You father was a good man, husband and dad and he set a great example in how to raise a son! I'm so sorry for you and all of your family. Please take care!
