Janet McDonald Obituary

Janet McDonald, 101, died Sunday, October 29, 2006, at St. Catherine's Village in Madison following a brief illness. Visitation is 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Wednesday at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Jackson with burial at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Prentiss.

Born in Wesson, September 3, 1905, the first child of Joseph and Bessie Walden McDonald, Miss McDonald graduated Belhaven College in Jackson in 1925 and taught in secondary schools in Jefferson Davis County. She attained a masters degree in mathematics from Tulane University in 1929 and resumed her teaching vocation at Hinds Junior College in Raymond.

In 1940 she entered the graduate school of the University of Chicago where she received her doctorate degree in mathematics in 1943. Doctor McDonald was a professor of mathematics at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, for 27 years. She studied and traveled abroad, spending much of her leisure in England, Scotland (home of her paternal grandfather), France, Greece, and Spain. Her extended studies took her to the University of Rome and Indiana University.

Returning to Mississippi in 1971, she became a resident of Jackson; and she taught a number of classes at Belhaven College. She was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church each place she lived and continued that association at Covenant Church in Jackson. In addition to her Womens Circle and Meals-on-Wheels work with Covenant Presbyterian, she was a member of the Heritage Club, the Cosmos Club, the Caledonia Society, and the Board of Directors of the YWCA.

Janet is preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Elizabeth McDonald and Jo Newton McDonald Lawrence; and her brother-in-law, Bert Lawrence, Sr., of Columbia. She is survived by her nephew, Bert Lawrence, Jr. and wife Sandra of Madison; nephew, Don Lawrence and wife Donna of Columbia; three great-nephews, two great-nieces-in-law, a great-great-nephew, and a great-great-niece.

It was a privilege to know Miss McDonald. She was always interested and interesting, and we shared a passion for preservation in the BCCA. She was a kind soul who will be missed here and rejoiced for in the hereafter.
