Joshua Horton Obituary

Rev. Joshua Horton, Sr.

Jackson

The Reverend Elder Joshua Horton, Sr., was born December 5, 1912 , to Elder Morris and Emily Horton in Edwards, MS. He confessed Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of twelve and joined the Pleasant Green Church of Christ (Holiness) USA. As a young man he had a very special love for the Lord and was committed to his allegiance to leading a Christian life.

He was educated at Little Zion, a branch of the Edwards Public School System.

He was united in Holy matrimony to his beloved wife Mattie Lloyd Horton on January 23, 1937.

Their marriage lasted seventy-five years. To this beloved union six daughters and seven sons were born.

He was called to the ministry and served as Campus Pastor at Christ Missionary and Industrial College of the Church of Christ (Holiness) USA for several years. He was employed in several barber shops in the city as a porter, retiring after more than fifty years of service.

He was well known and highly respected for his prolific knowledge of the Bible and his gift of wisdom, teaching and preaching the Word of God. He was an excellent example of a family man with impeccable character, whose total life was devoted to his radical allegiance to his servitude, to his family and the Kingdom of God. He served as deacon and assistant minister for over forty years at Third Temple Church of Christ (Holiness) U.S.A.

He was dedicated to the cause of equity in civil rights through his many years of supporting The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

He leaves a noble legacy that will forever be cherished and carried on by his family. He and his lovely wife's greatest investment was the successful rearing of their children. His total life was the great inspiration that motivated his offspring to serve in many capacities of society. He was blessed to see generations after him succeed and serve in society in the ministry, law enforcement, education, medicine, administration, business and many other capacities. He was often sought out by young mothers and fathers for his wise counsel in parenting and family life. His legacy will be treasured for many generations here after.

Elder Joshua Horton, Sr. was preceded in death by one son, Joshua Horton, Jr. and six siblings. He leaves to celebrate his renown and noble life of excellence: His beloved wife of seventy-five years, Mattie Lloyd Horton; six sons, Arthur Horton; Elder Eddie Horton, Sr. (Kathy); Bishop Dr. Jimmie Horton, Sr. (Michelle); Deputy Chief Lindsey Horton(LaaWanda); Elder Roy Horton, Sr. (Kathleen); Elder David Horton, Sr. (Dorothy); five daughters, Annie Mae Pickett; Isabella Horton; Dorothy Jean Horton; Mattie Oliver (John); Barbara Daniels (Robert); sixty grand and great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. As you grieve know that we are remembering you and honoring the memory of Elder Horton. I grew up @ Mt. Zion COCH USA, we always enjoyed his sermons and listening to him talk about his lovely wife as he so efficiently described her as, “beautiful and built like a coke cola bottle”. He loved his children and talk about them all the time too. Our thoughts and Prayers are with the Horton family.
