LC was a woman who knew what she wanted and was blessed to meet her goals. She was always trying to encourage the young people to be the best that they could be. Once when my sister Cathy was moving to
DC to start a new job, she told my mother "don't worry, I'll be here to help her get established" and she did. That's the type of person she was, always willing to help.

Not sure that anyone will see this now (October), but I have been trying to find L.C. For years with no luck. I worked for her in 1975 at the MS Prosoners' Defense Committee when I was an undergraduate at Antioch College. Unknown to her, she was largely responsible for my eventual career as a civil rights and, then, environmental attorney inBoston and Maine where I now live. She taught me to fight to change what was wrong, and not to blame those oppressing people, they just weren't taught any other way. Her lose must be decanting to her family, as it is to all who knew and loved her -- which included anyone who ever worked with her. My deepest sympathies to you. Jon Edwards

Knowing and loving L.C. was a great privilege in my life. Hers was an elegantly-furnished mind and she looked, always, for the good in humanity. Peoples lives changed because of her self-less good works. The world is a nicer place because she walked amongst us.

Sometime in 1988 or 1989, Governor Ray Mabus decided he wanted to offer L.C. a position in his administration. I was given the task of convincing L.C. to take it, since she had already hinted that becoming a state employee, even if it meant heading a government agency, was not her deal. She and I ended up talking for more than two hours, about growing up in the Delta under Jim Crow, participating in the movement, her family, her children, the first time she voted. She wouldn't let me talk about the job offer since she made clear early on it wasn't going to happen. Listening to L.C. Dorsey that day was nothing less than being given a front row seat in 20th Century Mississippi history. L.C. lived it with a gusto and commitment that has always inspired me. Our state is better because of her.
