Martha Doster Obituary

Martha S. Doster

Fannin

Martha Stevens Doster, 62, passed from this life Saturday, February 19, 2011 at St. Dominic Hospital, Jackson. Visitation is 5:00-8:00pm today at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl. Funeral services are 10am Monday, February 21, 2011 in the funeral home chapel with interment in Fannin Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Doster retired from Rankin County Schools in 2001 after 30 years of dedicated service, and was administrative assistant for Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home of Pearl for the last five years. Her hobbies included gardening, traveling and spending time with her family and her dogs. She was a beloved teacher, a friend to many, and an inspiration to all whose lives were touched by her.

Through Facebook, in recent years she reconnected with many former students. She often saved newspaper clippings related to these friends and their families and would laminate copies to send to them.

In a Living Legacy article of her life in The Rankin Record, May 28, 2009, in reference to her sons and students she was quoted saying, "I am proud of my two sons and my school children. I hope that I have made a positive difference to them."

She was preceded in death by her husband, Benny Doster; parents, George and Betty Stevens; and brother, Ken Stevens.

Survivors include sons, Chris Doster and wife, Kim of Brandon; and Doug Doster and partner, Matt Hillard of Fannin; grandchildren, Kenner and Collins Doster; sisters-in-law, Lee Chandler and husband, Kenneth of Huntsville, AL; Joy Mostellar and husband, Jack of Mobile, AL; and Sherry Powell and husband, Charles of Dothan, AL; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

I remember Martha from my childhood. Coach and his family lived down the street from me. The boys were always busy with football, but Martha always had a smile for the little neighbor-girl whenever she saw me. Not to mention, she was the prettiest teenager I had ever seen (aside from my sister.) I have thought of the Stevens' through a lot of years, after they left Wynwood Drive and moved to the Rez or wherever to run Main Harbor. My friends the Tadlocks were friends with the Stevens'. When my son played ball in Brandon, I kept up with them thru Kendall's mom. I looked for them on FB and found Martha there.

May God wrap his arms around your family at this sorrowful time.

Doug and Chris, working with your mom from 1988-1994 at NWR middle was a special time in my life. Martha was such a dynamic person, and I will never forget when she brought me a necklace she had made, hearts that were painted with flags and red and blue beads. Shen gave it to me and said, "I want you to have this because you care". My years of teaching at NWR were made much more memorable because of your mom, and of course, Doug, having you in my class was special also. Just know that your mom, my friend was a very special lady and God has called her home for the rest she deserves. She was always an angel to so many , and now she will watch over you all.

To Chris, Doug, the GRANDS and other family members: Mrs. Doster was the epitome of the best in teaching. She knew how to teach but she also knew how to "CARE" for students. She loved teaching and she loved her students. They knew it. And 'Mama' who sent her baby (no matter his/her age) off to school to Mrs. Doster knew that everything would be okay. Our love to you and our wish that God will comfort and bless you. Mary O'Gwynn and family-Holden, Leslie, Leah, Robert and David.

Chris and Doug, My deepest sympathy in the loss of your sweet Mother. We worked together when NWR first opened. I used to leave school 2 days a week and pick up Doug and come back to NW and have speech therapy. Then Doug would go home with his Momma. She was a fun and fabulous teacher and will be missed greatly!! She was always one of my favorites!! Love and prayers to both of you boys! Pam Omar

To Chris and family I would like to offer my condolences during this difficult time. I remember when I met Mrs. Doster it was the first day of school and I was in the 6th grade. She told they had been working on how to pronounce my name for the next day. May God Himself, the God of Peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 Sonjagela Johnson C/O 91

I always told her she was my fairy godmother. Whatever I needed, she had it, would get it or fix it. From sewing a button back on to being a shoulder for me to cry on. I thank the Lord for the years she was in my life.
