Negley England Obituary

Negley Frank England, 96, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2007, at his home at St. Catherine's Village in Madison, MS. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., today at Fondren Presbyterian Church, 3220 Old Canton Road, Jackson, MS. The Rev. Su McLain and The Rev. Raymond Clothier will officiate.
Neg was born October 17, 1910 in Palouse, Washington, the oldest son of Clyde Duval England and Mildred Negley England. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Bob England, a sister, Beth Bollong, and his wife Jane Russell England.
He is survived by his children, Kim and Mike England and Barbara and Bob England all of Jackson; his grandchildren, Chris, Rob and Zach England of Hattiesburg, Danielle England of Tupelo, and Lindsay, Jeremy and Elizabeth England of Jackson; and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana, and attended the University of Washington on a football scholarship. He excelled in a variety of sports including boxing and track and field. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. When he graduated in 1935 he became a competitive snow skier – a skill which led to work with Naval Intelligence in counter espionage for five years. He then joined the Navy and served as a Gunnery Commander aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Hollandia in the South Pacific until the end of World War II. He retired from the Naval Reserve after attaining the rank of Commander.
Neg and Jane started England Sailboats and Yachting Service in their home as a hobby in the early 1960s. When Neg retired from Carrier Corporation in 1972, he was able to devote all his time to England Sailboats, and they moved the business to a permanent location near the reservoir. Neg was one of the nine charter members of the Jackson Yacht Club when it began at Lake Hico in 1958. He was the third commodore of the Yacht Club and England Harbor was named in his honor. In May 2004, Neg received a Citation for Distinguished and Exceptional Service from the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta. It was presented by members and alumni of the chapter at Mississippi State University, where he helped the chapter raise money to buy their first fraternity house. He was a member of the United States Power Squadron and the Jackson Yacht Club. He was an active member of Fondren Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. At the time of his death he was a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of St. Catherine's Village for the wonderful care and love that they have given to Neg over the past seven years.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like for memorial contributions to be sent to the St. Catherine's Village Foundation, 200 Dominican Drive, Madison, MS 39110.

I am signing this Guest Book for my father, Robert Denny Watt. He was a fraternity brother, University of Washington Class of '35. Dad is now the only surviving member of that class. He is very emotional about the passing of his friend. He is now 95 and would like to do something himself, but he has just moved to a nursing home after two weeks in the hospital, and he will have to recuperate for a while. Yesterday he told me a story I would like to pass on.

In '31-'32, Dad and Neg were double dating and went out to a speakeasy located about a mile west of Kenmore. Apparently it was not a very gentile place, but the college students liked it. Another patron said something to my father's date, and Dad took offense. He said something to the person bothering his date, and the guy said "Wanna fight?" With that, Neg stood up from his chair and said "Yes." It was clear that Neg was a lot bigger than the other guy, but the offender didn't want to back down and they started to head outside. The other guy's friend said "Hey, he's the one who just won the UW's heavyweight boxing title. Let's get out of here." With that, the others left, and Dad and Neg were sat down to enjoy the bootlegged liquor and their dates.

Mr. and Mrs. England gave me my first job when I was 16, doing office work for them. They were both lovely people. I have many memories of Mr. England out at the JYC. My sympathy to the England family.

I knew Mr. England through his wife Jane. She was a Commissioner at the Boat and Water Safety Commission. He and his wife were wonderful and caring people and shared their sailing knowledge with others. May his family be blessed during this time and always.
