Larry Sams Obituary

Larry Sams, 85, of Hayesville, passed away Friday, Nov. 14, 2025 surrounded by his family. He was a native of Clay County and a graduate of Hayesville High School. After high school, Larry started a military career that spanned over many years. He first joined the Marine Corps and was a radio-telegraph operator. Later, he was a member of the N.C. Army National Guard and was part of the military police. He then finished his career in the U.S. Air Force as a services superintendent. He was a member of the American Legion Post 532. Larry was a teacher and taught for more than 30 years and was a counselor for more than 19 years. When Larry retired, he was a Veterans Administration Officer in Clay County for more than 15 years.
Larry was a wood carver and he loved building anything and working with wood. He enjoyed bee keeping, keeping chickens, gardening, canning and farming. He loved restoring old military jeeps and cars. Larry loved his family and being a papaw to his grandchildren.
He was the son of the late Earl and Anna Belle Coker Sams. He was also preceded in death by his brothers; Leon and Bob Sams.
Surviving is his loving wife and soul mate of 39 years, Janet Holden Sams; one son, Dan Sams and wife, Becky, of Hiawassee, Ga.; one step-son, Rodney Ashe, of Hayesville; one grandson: Michael Sams, of Hayesville; two granddaughters, Karley Reynolds and husband, Taylor, of Hayesville, and Kristen Ashe, of Hayesville; and three great-grandchildren: Jaxson Cole, Kinsley Grace and Cameron Chase Reynolds.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home in Hayesville. Minister Stacey Stephens will officiate.
