WASHINGTON, DC — Dr. Torrence Nathaniel Thomas, 46, beloved husband, son, brother, and friend, died on November 17, 2025, after courageously facing long-term respiratory illness.
Born in Nashville and raised in North Carolina, he was a distinguished scholar of medieval and ecclesiastical history, holding degrees from Duke and Yale. For more than a decade, he served as Head Cathedral Verger at Washington National Cathedral, guiding more than 1,500 services each year and offering steady leadership during national moments of mourning and remembrance.
He is survived by his wife, Jalene Spain Thomas, his parents, brother, and extended family.
Funeral services will be held at Washington National Cathedral on Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. and will be viewable at: www.youtube.com/live/GVuAeRQxEFs, with visitation at Joseph Gawler's Sons on Monday, Dec. 1, from 4-7 p.m.; he will be interred at the Cathedral.
