Butler Whitfield Obituary

Butler B. Whitfield, Jr., 70, passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2021 after a short illness at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Butler was born on December 24, 1950 in Mobile, AL to Butler B. Whitfield, Sr. and Mary Ann Sutton Whitfield. He grew up in Macclenny, FL and graduated from Glenville High School in 1969, he went on to study at Brewton Parker College and Valdosta State University. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force. In 1977 he moved to Hinesville where he worked for Coastal Utilities for thirty years, owned The Floor Butler Carpet Cleaning for ten years, and also worked for Atlantic Communications on Hilton Head Island for six years.

Butler touched many lives with his gentle, generous spirit. He made sure children got to church and to Sunday School and was very instrumental in bringing them to Christ. He worked tirelessly for the homeless and men in the Prisoner Reentry Program. Butler was an active and faithful member of Midway United Methodist Church for many years, serving on numerous usher and communion committees. He enjoyed attending his Sunday School class.

Butler also enjoyed taking his beloved dogs for their daily car ride and then feeding the fish who would be waiting at his dock at McIntosh Lakes. He enjoyed gathering with friends at the Greenhouse and dancing to the music of local talent. He also liked to help his wife care for their many plants. He was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan and liked to spend time with his friends watching the games. Butler was loved by many and had many friends; he is most referred to as being "a fine man" and "a good guy." If you were a CEO or a janitor, it didn't matter, he saw every person as being a child of God and treated everyone with respect. He influenced many for the Kingdom of God just by being him. Butler will be sorely missed, especially by his wife and soulmate who is so thankful for the twenty-five wonderful years they shared together.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Butler Whitfield, Sr. and Mary Ann Whitfield; two sisters, Susan McSwain and Teresa Whitfield; son, Jason Cornell; three brothers-in-law, Bucky, Robert, and Bill Pearson.

Buter is survived by the love of his life and wife of twenty-five years, Mary Beth Whitfield; daughters, Wendy Whitfield Walker (Brad) and Kimberly Cornell Mobley (Jamie Patterson); son, Scott Whitfield; three grandsons, Grayson Dickens, Trent Mobley, and Mason Mobley; great-grandson, Phillip (PJ) Jones; daughter-in-law, Toni Spillane-Cornell; aunt, Jocille Robinson; brother, Dalton Joseph Whitfield; two sisters, Debra Sanders and Melissa Whitfield Varley; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his beloved fur babies, HoBo, Blue, and Little Dog.

Funeral services will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at Midway United Methodist Church with Reverend Hank Perry officiating. Butler's family will receive friends for thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial with Military Honors will immediately follow in the church cemetery.
