James Martin Obituary

Sheriff James Donald "J. Don" Martin Sr., 70, died at his home May 27, 2010, as a result of complications from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends. He was born Aug. 14, 1939, in Taylors Creek and was a 1957 graduate of Bradwell Institute.

He lived most of his life in Liberty County, a place so dear to his heart. Don was a retired rural letter carrier, serving as first district president of Georgia Rural Carriers Association and being awarded Most Outstanding Carrier of the Year for Georgia in 1965. He served on the State Executive Committee in 1969.

His high school athletic abilities and devotion to community sports earned him induction into the 2009 Liberty County Athletic Hall of Fame. Among those varied sporting endeavors, he coached recreation and high school athletic teams of football, basketball and baseball in both Liberty and Montgomery counties. He was intramural director for Brewton-Parker College, volunteer athletic director for Montgomery County and founding member and president of the Mount Vernon Athletic Officials' Association.

Don served as chairman of the March of Dimes Campaign for Montgomery County, was president of Harvey Overton Booster Club and served on state finance committee of Bo Ginn for Governor Campaign.

He was in his 18th year as sheriff of Liberty County and received numerous accolades including Sheriff of the Year 2001; a medal from the honorable order of Saint Michael, signed by Ronald Regan, 2001; inclusion in the 100,000 Club with special achievement award for outstanding fund raising efforts on behalf of Georgia Sheriffs' Association/Youth Homes, 2008; inclusion in the Top Ten Club, 2008; inclusion in the Police Officers' Association of Georgia where he had 100 percent participation of his department employees every year; Boss of the Year, 2002 in the Hinesville Officials' Association of Public Servants; and many certificates for his continued support of the Boy Scouts.

Sheriff Martin was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Hinesville, where he was a member of the Overton Men's Bible Class, previously served on the Administrative Board, was chairman of the ushers, and chairman of the cemetery trustees.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Ruth Martin, and his brother, Bill Martin. He is survived by his wife, Polly; sons, Jimmy (Susan) Martin and Gill Martin; daughter, Kathy (Greg) Poole; stepchildren, Terri (Schel) Paulk of Guyton and Jody (Kristin) Underwood of Boston, Mass.; his cherished grandchildren, J. Don Martin III, Cole Martin, John David Moran, Lydia Moran and Robert Martin; brothers, Paul Martin of Stockbridge, George (Gail) Martin of Kalamazoo, Mich., Jerry (Nancy) Martin of Decatur; sister, Ann (Jim) Biles of Fayetteville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Saturday, May 29, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel, 308 W. Oglethorpe Hwy., Hinesville.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Sheriff Martin will be 3 p.m., Sunday, May 30, at Liberty County High School gymnasium followed by interment at The Hinesville Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons J. Don III and Cole Martin and John David Moran, nephews Audie and Andy Martin, Jay Biles and Glenn Martin and Jody Underwood. Honorary pallbearers are members of Overton Men's Bible Class and Liberty County Sheriff's Department.

The family requests any remembrances, in lieu of flowers, be donated in his name to Georgia Sheriffs' Youth Homes, Attention: Development Division, P.O. Box 1000, Stockbridge, GA 30281.

I didn't know Sheriff Martin all that well, but I did have the pleasure of meeting him while in line at the Hinesville (now called Heritage) bank. As a father to a then Savannah police officer, I told Mr. Martin how I felt about the stressful duties law enforcement personnel endure. I told him I would be voting for him in the next election and he thanked me for that. May you rest in peace Sheriff Martin and thank you for your service.

To the entire Martin family,

I was shocked to hear about the loss of Mr. Don. My late father and I, first met Mr. Don when we all worked together at the Hinesville Post Office. He made it so much fun to come to work each day. Mr. Don was a public servant who was always there for the people he served. Almost 4 years ago, when I lost both of my parents, Mr. Don cut both of their obituaries out, lamenated them and send them to me with a beautiful hand written note. I still cherish those today.

I hope that your wonderful memories of Mr. Don will help you as you go through the next days, weeks, months and years.

I am so very sorry for your loss. God bless all of you!

May 29, 2010

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
