Johnnie Riles Obituary
Johnnie was born in Liberty County to loving parents, the late Johnnie Riles Jr. and Minnie Mikel Riles. Johnnie was highly accomplished and unforgettable. He was a recipient of two educational degrees, master's and doctorate. He was a member of Bethel AME Church where he also served as an ordained minister. He also worked as a high school basketball coach at Bradwell Institute. While in the Army, he served as a first lieutenant military chaplain.
His survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Kelvin and Cher Riles of Houston, Texas; four brothers, Warren (Matilda) Riles of Midway, Carrol (Sylvia) Riles of Hinesville, Donald Riles of Hinesville and Larry Riles of Tacoma, Wash.; two sisters, Doris (Richard) Nero of Kansas City, Mo., and Carolyn (Donald) Brown of Hinesville; one grandson, Madison Riles; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Viewing will be from 1-5 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Dorchester Funeral Home in Midway.
His funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1370 Shaw Road, Hinesville. His Body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. for viewing until the hour of the service.
Dorchester Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

To the Riles Family: I never knew Johnnie, but after attending the service yesterday I know that he was a special person. It was especially gratifying to know that his son is picking up the mantle to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. May Johnnie rest in peace.

Johnnie was there when I preached my first sermon at Bethel and i will never forget the words of encouragement he gave to me that day. My heart and prayers go out to each and every one of you. Johnnie and I were classmates. And I will always have those memories of him. He visited my family while lived in Washington DC. Deepest sympathy to the Riles family. it's been a great privilege to have known Rev. Riles. Through him I was able to get a slot on air and for that I will be forever greatful.
