Cpl. Joseph "Marc" Matthews, 50, of Hinesville passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, at Candler Hospital after a short illness.
Marc was born on June 2, 1960, in Charleston, W.Va., and was raised in Scott Depot, W.Va. After graduation, he joined the United States Army where he would serve 21 years as a military police officer. Marc was a kennel master and K-9 handler. After his retirement in 1999, he worked for the U.S. Marshal Services at the federal courthouse in Savannah before joining the Hinesville Police Department in 2001. During his time of employment with the Hinesville Police Department he also worked as an officer, was promoted to the rank of corporal and was a K-9 handler.
In his spare time, Marc enjoyed woodworking and football. Music was a very important part of Marc's life. He played acoustic and electric guitar and loved many different types of music.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Mi Suk Matthews of Hinesville; daughter, Ashley Matthews of Hinesville; son, William Matthews and fiancé, Taryn of Salt Lake City, Utah; parents, Joseph and Juanita Matthews of Hinesville; granddaughter, Ava Matthews of Salt Lake City; and his faithful K-9 partner, Brad.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 21, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at the First United Methodist Church of Hinesville with the Rev. Dr. Rich Wright and Rev. Nam Sun Lee officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Hinesville Police Department.
Interment services with honors will follow in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville.
