Theodore A. "Ted" Bickart

Theodore A. (Ted) Bickart passed away peacefully on October 20th, 2023, at age 88. Ted grew up in Maryland and attended Johns Hopkins University for BS, MS, and Doctor of Engineering degrees. After military service, he became Professor of Electrical Engineering at Syracuse University. Ted advanced to Dean of Engineering at Syracuse and then Dean of Engineering at Michigan State, due to his scholarship, persistence, community building skills, and belief in the importance of educating the next generation of engineering students. A Fulbright Scholar at Kiev Polytechnic Institute in the USSR, he also was a visiting scholar at the Nanjing Institute of Technology and at University of California-Berkeley.

Ted moved to Colorado in 1998 where he served as President of the Colorado School of Mines until he retired. Although "retired," Ted continued his mission to grow international educational curricula through consulting and with professional organizations such as IEEE, ABET, and ASEE. Throughout his career, Ted developed lasting professional and personal ties with institutions and scholars around the world.

In his spare time Ted pursued favorite hobbies including model trains, woodworking, hiking, and gardening. Ted was an inspirational father and grandfather to Bickart, Zhang, Cumming, Ruff, Heroux, and Milz families. His five children, ten grandchildren, and dear friends have always appreciated his energy, curiosity, kindness, and wisdom.

Ted's wife Frani, loving family, and adored cats request that in lieu of flowers you consider donating to one of the scholarship or educational funds below. A memorial gathering will take place on Saturday November 11th 2-4pm at Golden Pond Retirement Community, Table Mountain Room, 1270 N Ford Street.
