Robin Maitland Obituary

Robin Maitland of Lafayette has died age 93. He was born at home in Finchley Church End, a bucolic suburb north of London. He was the youngest of three children of Grace and Marshall Maitland. In 1939 he joined the Royal Navy as a Signalman and served in destroyers throughout the six seas (never getting to the seventh, the Antarctic). He retired in 1947 as Commander of a frigate and immigrated to the Colonies with a pregnant wife and a sheepdog. Until 1989 he worked in advertising in New York City, retiring as a Senior Director of Pan American World Airways. He was Secretary of the Episcopal Mission Society. For a while he was a Gardener for the Maritime Center by the Sea in Norwalk, Connecticut. In 1946 he married Anne Kelly of Riverside, Connecticut. They divorced in 1955. They have two children: Margaret Brooks of Little Bookham, England, and Will Maitland Weiss of New York City. Margaret has three children: Colin, Toby, and Emma. Will has two: Alexandra and Victoria. In 1960 Mr. Maitland married Ann Louise Cummings of Cape Cod. She died in 2001. In 2002 with his companion and best friend Trudy Morron (and two cats) he immigrated to Lafayette. They are members of St. John's Episcopal Church in Boulder. Mr. Maitland's ashes will be in part interred in the St. John's Columbarium and in part committed to the Sea, carrying him home to Great Britain.

Warmest wishes and sincere belated condolences to the Maitland family. My warmest memories of Robin are from the Greenbank Hotel, Falmouth, Cornwall, UK. Robin stayed with us on several visits to the United Kingdom with his family. I was lucky enough to have enjoyed many conversations with he and shall remember fondly his communications that always arrived by post in his very own hand.

And so to you Mr Maitland, in the best of maritime traditions... I wish you clear horizons.
