Nov. 22, 1937 - Dec. 10, 2023
LaVISTA - Eugene William Labens, 86, died peacefully, on Dec. 10th, at Cedarhurst Assisted Living, in LaVista, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents, William & Dilly (Gullion) Labens, brother Ray Labens, and son, Greg Labens.
He is survived by his wife Bonnie (Hruska), son Larry (Julie), of Papillion, daughter-in-law, Grace, of Indianapolis, and 5 grandchildren, their spouses, and 5 great-grandchildren.
Gene was born in Columbus, NE., and lived on a farm northwest of Richland, NE. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1955.
He met Bonnie, and they married in 1958. He was a veteran of the Army National Guard. He worked at Behlen Manufacturing, until 1972. He and Bonnie were owners of Gloor Bakery in Columbus, for 11 years. Gene was a great baker and influenced his sons in that trade. Gene was then a custodian at Peace Lutheran Church, for 30 years, and served as a crossing guard for the city schools.
Gene loved sports, following Columbus High basketball, and Husker football, attended many Cubs baseball games, and was thrilled when they won the World Series. He also enjoyed horse races.
Gene was baptized, confirmed, and is still a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus. He & Bonnie enjoyed traveling to visit their children, Greg, Grace, and family in Indianapolis, Larry and Julie's cabin, in Montana, and to Arizona for the winter.
A private family service will be held at a later date.

Bonnie, Larry, and Julie,
A belated message. First great sympathies in your loss. I appreciate the memory Eugene gave to me. Larry had me over for a sleepover and we were able to go to the bakery, in the early hours of the morning, to help clean the bread pans. The satisfying reward was the warm cherry turnover, with vanilla frosting, fresh out of the oven. Thank you Bonnie for sharing your husband with myself and others.
