With profound sadness, but taking comfort in a life well lived, the family of Gayle Callan announces her passing on Sunday, February 8, 2026. Gayle left us to join the great wild natural world she so deeply loved, surrounded by her family.

A visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Saturday, February 21, 2026, from 1 – 3 PM. A natural burial will take place at Mount Vernon Cemetery in Peru, Nebraska, at a later date.

Gayle was born on August 3, 1940, in Nebraska City, Nebraska, to Ross and Roberta (Cowell) Gerber. Gayle found her truest self in the quiet of the woods, near the rush of the river, bird watching, or on the lake enjoying her family and friends. An avid gardener, hiker, and traveler, she spent her time cultivating beauty, relationships, and humor. She was the first to find the earliest spring flowers and the last to leave the lake at sunset. Her laugh, which was bright and contagious, will be deeply missed.

Gayle is survived by: her husband of 66 years, Ron Callan of Columbus; daughter, Shayne Callan (Gerald) of Mountain View, AR; daughter, Cori (Steve) Callan Westley of Columbus; grandchildren, Ian (Megan) Ciurej of Stanton, NE, Ryan Ciurej of Columbus, Brennan (Jazmyn) Callan of Columbus; great-grandchildren, Marik and Jude Ciurej.

Gayle was preceded in death by: parents, Ross and Roberta Gerber; sister, Mary Beth (Gerber) Burgess.
