JoAnn Hoffer Obituary

JoAnn Hoffer

June 27, 1941 - November 30, 2025

JoAnn Hoffer, 84, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, November 30, 2025, at Cottonwood Assisted Living in Columbus.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, December 8, 2025, at 10:30 AM, at St. Luke's United Church of Christ with Rev. Adam Lassen officiating. Interment will be held in Graceland Cemetery, Shelby, Nebraska. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 8 from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. JoAnn was born in Shelby, Nebraska, to Art and Anna (Rohrich) Scholz on June 27, 1941. JoAnn attended school in Shelby and graduated in 1958. On July 6, 1958, she married Stan Hoffer in Schuyler, Nebraska, and were married 39 years.

JoAnn worked for the Platte Co. Extension office for 35 years. She helped raise gerbils for classrooms in the area. She was also known as the "Popcorn Lady" and gave presentations to school children. JoAnn then became a special education paraprofessional for Columbus Public Schools for 15 years. She found that job very rewarding.

Some of her favorite things were gardening and cultivating "Derby Beans." If you asked her, they were the best beans you could grow! Baking and canning also filled her days. According to JoAnn you could never have too many recipe books. She was a loyal Husker fan. From Husker football watch parties to attending home volleyball games.

She was a proud season ticket holder to Husker volleyball. JoAnn even attended the world's largest volleyball game in Lincoln. Let us not forget that she was addicted to QVC. Her favorite program on TV after her sports, that is….

Those left behind to remember her and honor her memory: Traci (Brian) Polacek of Sac City, IA, Tonya (Rob) Weberg of Eugene, MO, Todd (Jennifer) Scholz of Omaha, NE and Debbie Scholz (Ron Taylor) of Shelby, NE and many cousins, nieces and nephews, friends and great neighbors.

Those proceeding her in death: parents Art and Ann Scholz, husband Stan Hoffer, brother and sister-in-law Gene and Linda (Carter) Scholz.

To honor her memory, we are requesting you wear your Husker attire to the funeral.

In lieu of flowers please send memorials to the University of Nebraska Medical Center Hope Fund for Women's Cancer Research.

JoAnn is remembered by me as someone who brought yummy food to our family events. I also remember that she had lovely handwriting and wrote interesting Christmas letters. My Mom and Dad always looked forward to hearing from her. I also exchanged Christmas cards after both my parents were gone.
I haven't seen her in years, but know she was loved by many.
Janis Henkel, I was Stan's cousin. My parents were Vernon and Donna Keehn.
