Marilyn was born July 5, 1934, to Axel Elmer and Gertrude Irene (Ottoson) Gustafson in Greeley, Colorado. She attended school in Galeton, Colorado, graduating from Galeton High School in 1951. She then attended Colorado A & M in Ft. Collins for secretarial training, graduating in 1953. Marilyn began working at Eaton Bank, where she served as assistant cashier and secretary to the president.

Marilyn was a homemaker while Don's job as a teacher and public school administrator took them to Sargent, Loup City, Columbus and Stromsburg. Through the years, she enjoyed countless school concerts, programs, and ball games. In 1978, Marilyn began working at the First National Bank of Stromsburg as secretary and bank officer. She retired as vice president in 1998. She was a dedicated homemaker and mother, and especially enjoyed family gatherings. Other hobbies included sewing, scrapbooking and traveling to visit family.

She was a member of the Stromsburg Evangelical Free Church for more than 50 years, and was involved in numerous activities of the church, from playing the piano and singing in the choir, to various women's ministries. Her joyful hospitality and frequent visitation brought encouragement to many in the church and community.
