Mark German

1948 - 2024

Mark Anthony German, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home with his wife and three children by his side on July 2, 2024. Born on May 29, 1948, in Humphrey, NE, to William and Conradia (Veik) German, Mark's life was a testament to his love, Faith, commitment, and sense of humor.

Mark attended St. Bonaventure and graduated from Columbus High School in 1966. He continued his education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and received an associate degree from Central Community College.

A proud Vietnam War veteran, Mark served from 1968 to 1970. He saw heavy combat and received numerous medals and commendations.

Mark married the love of his life, Kathy, on July 17, 1971. They were deeply committed to each other, and their bond was unbreakable through all of life's trials and adventures. They built their dream home north of Columbus where they raised their children and later enjoyed their grandchildren and retirement.

Mark began his 35+ year career at BD Medical as a tool and die machinist and worked his way up to head of maintenance and building management. He was instrumental in the expansion of the second BD Medical facility in Columbus and retired in 2007. His strong work ethic continued at Fastenal, contracting with BD, and as a business owner of an electrical services company.

Mark's inventive mind led to numerous patents while at BD. He also helped design and build parts of the Columbus Parks and Recreation Trails system (CART).

Mark's athleticism, competitiveness, and love for sports were a constant throughout his life. He excelled in football, basketball, and track & field in school. He enjoyed downhill skiing, inline skating, and biking. He especially enjoyed time with family and friends enjoying any game or activity. This passion naturally extended to his children and grandchildren where he was a volunteer youth coach. Most importantly, he offered unwavering love and support in all their pursuits, from academics, sports, and to life's big and small moments.

Mark loved the simple pleasures in life... holding hands and walking with Kathy, traveling in their camper, hiking, spending time outdoors, and attending church. He proudly wore the title of "World's Greatest Grandpa." He loved listening to '60s and '70s classic rock and tinkering with projects in his shed and garage. Mark enjoyed building things, from houses to memories. He took meticulous care of his family and home earning him the playful nickname "Mr. Perfect" at home. He had a generous spirit. He donated gallons of blood with the Red Cross, volunteered with the American Legion Hartman Post #84 including the Honor Guard, and chipped in wherever there was a need.

Mark was charming, kind, and known for his friendly nature and charisma. He couldn't go anywhere without stopping to catch up with EVERYONE. During his illness, he remained a favorite among the care and nursing staff and they could often be found outside throwing a football or going for a walk.

Mark's smile, laughter, and dedication to family and community will be deeply missed. He is forever loved and will live on in our hearts.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 29, 2024, at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus.

The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. A Vigil service will follow the visitation, starting at 6:00 in the church. Visitation will continue Monday morning at St. Bonaventure from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Hartman Post #84 Honor Guard. Interment will be at St. Bonaventure Cemetery followed by a luncheon at The American Legion Hartman Post #84.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mark's memory to St. Bonaventure church, American Legion Hartman Post #84, and Alzheimer's research for a cure.

? Sister: Kathy (Jay) Jackson of Columbus, NE
