Norbert Kalkowski Obituary

OMAHA - Norbert F. Kalkowski, 90, of Omaha, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, in Omaha.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church in Omaha. A wake service will be held 8 p.m. today at Heafey-Heafey-Hoffmann-Dworak-Cutler West Center Chapel in Omaha. Burial is at Calvary Cemetery in Omaha, with military honors by Benson VFW Post #2503.

Mr. Kalkowski was born Sept. 18, 1913, near Ashton. He attended Ashton High School and Grand Island Business College.

He married Jane Seabeck in 1938. She died in May of 1988.

During World War II he served with the U.S. Army Transportation Corps in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, and at various Army facilities in the Seattle area. After his discharge, he returned to Sherman County to work for a few years in family businesses. In 1950 he moved to Loup City, where he served as Sherman County Treasurer, before joining Consumers Public Power (later Nebraska Public Power District). He stayed with NPPD for 26 years, moving to Kearney and Columbus before retiring as Norfolk district accounting manager in 1978. In 1982 he moved to Omaha.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Lions, the Elks, and a former Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed gardening, reading, sports, history, and traveling.

Survivors include five daughters, Patricia Nilsson of Omaha, Mary Jane Atkinson of Boise, Idaho, Barbara McIlwain of Bradenton, Fla., Margaret Mallane of Boise, Idaho, and Shelly Kalkowski Ling of Fort Collins, Colo.; two sons, Kenneth "Buzz" Kalkowski of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and John Kalkowski of Lombard, Ill.; 20 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife and two sisters, Emily Digre and Helen Polski.

Memorials are suggested to the Nursing Scholarship Fund at Creighton University in Omaha.
