COLUMBUS - Robert "Bob" J. Korgie, 82, of Columbus, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at the Columbus Community Hospital.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus, with the Rev. Del Lape officiating. Burial is at the All Saints Cemetery in Columbus, with military honors by Hartman Post No. 84 American Legion Honor Guard.
Visitation is from 3-5 p.m. Tuesday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus, and after 6 p.m. Tuesday, with a 7 p.m. vigil, at the church. Visitation continues Wednesday morning from 8-10 a.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Korgie was born July 28, 1923, in Columbus, to Charles and Victoria (Sus) Korgie. He attended grade school at St. Anthony's and then entered the St. Joseph Seminary in Chicago. He also attended Northwestern University in Chicago. Bob served in the United States Navy during World War II from 1942-1948, being stationed on 6 Navy Destroyers. His tour of duty included the Normandy Invasion on D-day. He then served in the Pacific Theater. Following his discharge, Bob returned to Columbus where he was the second man hired at the Becton-Dickinson Plant.
He married Claire (Reitz) Birkel on Nov. 11, 1950, at St. Rose Of Lima Church in Genoa. The couple moved to San Pedro, Calif., where they lived for eight years. They returned to Nebraska in 1960, where Bob went to work for Dale Electronics, retiring after 28 years of service.
He was a member of the church, Knights of Columbus, and Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 3704. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, crossword puzzles, cards and spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Claire Korgie of Columbus; one daughter, Michelene (Ray) Pilakowski of Columbus; four sons, Timothy (fiancee Kim Westby) Korgie of Long Beach, Calif., Thomas (Sue) Korgie of Omaha, Robert (Dianne) Korgie of Columbus, and Ronald (Renee) Korgie of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; one sister, Margaret Lusche of Columbus; one sister-in-law, Judith Korgie of Mauston, Wis.; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Victoria Korgie; one grandson, Michael Pilakowski; two sisters, Dorothy Iwan and Helen Moyers; four brothers, Edward Korgie, Frank Korgie, Leo Korgie and the Rev. Humbert Korgie O.F.M.
Memorials may be directed to St. Anthony Church or Scotus Central Catholic.
