Roger Garbers Obituary

Roger Garbers

March 20, 1950 - July 15, 2025

Roger Garbers, 75, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at his home in Columbus.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 19 at 10:00 AM, at Highland Park Church with Pastor Mike Escen officiating. Private family interment will be held in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue Saturday from 9:00 AM until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, plants, stones, etc., memorials are suggested to Highland Park Youth Ministry programs or the Columbus Rescue Mission.

Roger was born March 20, 1950, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Elmer and Mary (Jackson) Barbers. He graduated from Columbus High School. Roger worked at Behlen Mfg. Co. from 1968 through 2021. Roger began his time at Behlen Mfg. Co. working on the shop floor while attending Nettleton Technical Institute in Columbus. After studying drafting, he worked in the building division sales and customer service until his retirement in 2021. He made lasting friendships with his fellow employees and customers.

On December 22, 1972, Roger was united in marriage to Peggy Shalon at St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus. He was an active member of Highland Park Church where he was very involved in the youth ministry programs, not only at church, but also in the community. Roger was a soccer coach for many years enjoying coaching his two sons.

Roger was a brilliant light in the lives of all who knew him. He lived a life of kindness, gentleness, love, compassion and deep faith in God. His passing leaves a big void in many people's hearts. We will remember Roger not by the way he left this world but by the way he lived his life. He never met a stranger as we always discovered when he would spend two hours at the grocery store, with only one item on his list. He would never hesitate to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His laugh was contagious and offered freely to all around him. He has left us and this world but he will never be forgotten. His memory will stay with family, friends and all who knew him.

Roger loved his family and enjoyed being with them whenever he could. He would not hesitate to travel to visit and help those in need. His kindness was also shared with animals starting with his Shetland ponies, his black lab KC, and the free-range cats at the farm.

Roger is survived by Wife, Peggy Garbers of Columbus, NE; Son, Brad Garbers of Lincoln, NE; Son, Craig Garbers of Columbus, NE; Brother, Fred (Pat) Garbers of Columbus, NE; Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

Roger was preceded in death by Parents, Elmer and Mary Garbers; Daughter-in-law, Carrie Garbers; Sister, Janet Garbers; Infant Sister, Violet Garbers.

Roger has left us now, but his memory never will. He has flown to heaven to be with his Lord.
